Default SMITH: Raps could make pitch for Nash this summer?

Taken from todays Doug Smith Raptors Blog:

Quote:
Is there a chance the Raptors could make a pitch for Steve Nash this summer? Oh yeah.

According to a nice little NBA salary thing I found in this computer, there is a chance Nash could become a free agent this July. The final year of his deal is not fully guaranteed – if the Suns waive him before July 1 this year they only owe him $7 million – and if money’s so tight and things continue to deteriorate on the court, maybe that’s a way for zany owner Robert Sarver to save some cash.

Now, I’m not suggesting that is going to happen, nor am I suggesting the Raptors would go out and pursue him vigorously if it did, I’m just saying I’m tired of reading about how bad the Raptors are and how dopey I am and this maybe is an alternative “talking point.”
So what happens then? ... Trade Jose for a starting 2 guard? Hrmm

I think it might be time to start cheering for a new team then. Seriously, if this were to happen, I'd strongly begin rooting against us.

Hmmmmmm? If I'm Steve Kerr.... should I buy out a two time MVP for "only" $7 mil or keep him to potentially trade..... Hmmmmmm?

Why even bother typing these words? What a waste of everyone's time

I really hope this does not happen. Nash's body can hardly handle the daily grind and he is even worse than Jose on defense.

Besides, the Suns franchise is very dedicated to Nash.

If BC is a good GM (rather than a good friend), he will not make a big move for Nash. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of signing him to a smaller 1 year contract in 2010 and have him come off the bench, though.

We're talking Steve Kerr here. He single handedly dismantled the most exciting team in the NBA in less than a year :P

Nash is my #2 fave player of all-time, but this is 5 years too late.

I'm so sick of hearing this and don't even understand it. Why would we pick him up on the way down? Yes, he is still great, but for how long? How long until we don't just see him lying on the sidelines stretching out his back, but just lying down on the sidelines...lying down?

Yeah but he's still a serious upgrade over what we have...plus would be awesome for the franchise and country to have him playing. I would love to have him mentor Roko for a couple years...so when Nash is done, Roko should be in good position to take over.

Nash is still better than Calderon, half court or full court. He can't finish inside when he penetrates like he used to, although against Toronto he showed he still can when it matters, but he still creates far more easy opportunities off pick and rolls or in transition than Jose does. He's a better ball handler, a better passer, and better at creating his own shot.

Nash works extremely hard to stay in top physical condition.
If he thinks he can play until he's 38 then I think it's worth looking into.
It all depends on the asking price.
Jose has the potential to be Nash-like. He just has to loosen up a bit and take more chances. The talent and vision is there, he's just got to fight his conservative instincts.

I think the Raptors have demonstrated that they can't run. Not just because of Jose's game, but because they lack the effort to get down the court and even worse, the effort to get back on D.

Don't get me wrong, I love Nash, I understand how it would be great to have a Canadian star playing for the Raptors, etc., but I'd rather see the Raptors make some solid moves at other positions before PG.
