Default Smith: Marion Would Only Be A Short Term Rental

Like duh .... I think we all knew that so I'm not sure why Doug is making it sound like he's breaking the news to us that if Marion was dealt here that he'd re-sign long term.

Now, I donít know for sure whether Shawn Marion will ever be a Raptor, Iíd say thereís and since I donít know how Pat Riley thinks I canít even put a percentage on it, but I do know this: All the e-mailers who think heís a bad fit because heís not a ďslasherĒ shouldnít get too worked up.

What he will be more likely than not, if he gets here, is a short-term rental and not a long-term solution.

Heíll be looking for some kind of raise off his $17 million salary when heís a free agent this summer and I cannot imagine the Raptors giving it to him. So if the OíNeal deal does go down, donít worry about next year because I canít see Marion being here then.

Come on guys...read what he says...he's getting bombarded with emails from ignorant fans thinking it IS a longterm thing and he's responded. Not everyone is hooked up on RF you know

Yeah, Marion long term isn't a secret. Cap space this off-season year would be a thing of beauty, if it's attainable.

Again, the problem is, who do we target after Marion expires?? Still no true slashers.

that's why the best move may be to be a seller of capspace to the 2010 market. 2011 isn't too bad of a free agency summer and should have a more cap-friendly cba to help the team going forward.

we might even be able to drop some immediate salary burden so we're not up against the tax line like we are now, thus allow some flexibility and pick up some talent and/or picks in the process. teams will tie themselves up in 2010, many with bad deals. toronto could position itself very well for the long term by leapfrogging the 2010 mania.

for example: JO+Kapono for Rose, Jefferies, James, Gallinari

Rose is a big expiring. I believe James is close to being granted injury retirement status and having insurance cover him and an exception awarded, he expires the same year as o'neal, Jefferies would probably start over Moon, and Gallinari has a lot of potential--I really like this kid. those two are the only ones that go past 2010.

don't be so tough on doug, he's doing a great job promoting the sport. As swan said, he's mostly targetting the average fan, not the ultra hardcores. And even among hardcores, I'm sure there are some who feel like we're going to keep marion if we can work out a deal with him.

There's no way that Marion expects to get more than $17M/yr for his next contract.... lol... he's deluded at times.. but he's not insane.
