Arrow Smith: Hedo will probably continue to come off the bench

Quote:
But he, and you, should get used to it because I canít see them going away from Weems for the rest of this season. And it seems everyoneís quite okay with that.

Turk, a pre-game media session, said heís got no problem with the decision, Jay likes the athleticism the new lineup brings and thereís no way they should change it in the next nine games.

Actually, no one should be at all surprised at Hedoís reaction.

If thereís one thing Iíve learned over this season is that his default position is to laugh and joke and smile. Itís not that he isnít upset or angry or disappointed in his effort but his immediate reaction to anything is to smile and laugh. Itís his character and itís not going to change at this point in his life.

It may not fit the prototypical personality we like in our athletes, he doesnít slam the ball to the floor or act disgusted or give the greatest angst-filled quotes. But itís who he is and thatís got to be accepted.

Now, as a backup? Well, itís not like heís going to come into games and energize them or up the tempo or get the crowd roiling but he looked last night like a pretty solid second-unit guy.

And Jay made an interesting point before the game: When things were going well, Hedo, Jarrett and DeRozan were the starting backcourt. Now, they play together as a second unit and that canít be all that bad.

If you look at the minutes distribution last night - Hedo at 28, Jarrett at 23 and DeMar at 20 Ė thatís not bad and I imagine thatís what weíll see the rest of the way.

Although I completely agree that he should be coming off the bench, its awesome that we pay the guy 10 million a year and thats about as good as he has been this season...a bench player

i still think starting derozan was a good move. throw him to the wolves, see what he can do and what he can learn. it wasn't him that started the year slowly, and he was just fine as a starter during the mid-year success. now that it's crunch time it's a good move to put your best starting 5 out there, but for derozan's development i liked him where he was until now. starting weems from day one was not in the cards since everyone thought he's be a deep bench guy. wright was awful for long stretches of the year. i don't think bringing derozan off the bench was going to make any difference to the record through the end of february.

Now all we need is Jay to learn to go with the hot hand. When someone is playing well, regardless of who it is, give them a few more minutes. If someone is stinking it up, use the bench.

I like having Sonny in the starting lineup over Derozan because Sonny sticks the open mid-range jumpers on a more consistent basis. Sonny may be in the starting lineup for his defense, but his improving jumper is definitely an added bonus. Sonny's mechanics are very misleading. His results are what matter. Yeah, it's good Derozan got lots of experience, but his outside shot was a liability when playing teams that prepared well. You could see that some opposing defenses were daring him to shoot. If he's coming off the bench, Derozan might get more opportunities to drive the ball against opposing second units. We'll have to wait and see how it works.

At the risk of sounding crazy, Turk actually looked decent last night as a bench player. The funny thing is, I'm not sure his numbers will drop off all that much. Against opposing 2nd units, he won't be as big of a defensive liability. So, he'll probably still get 25+ minutes. And since he'll be playing fewer minutes with Jose, Bosh and Bargs (except for the 4th q, one of Bosh or Bargs will probably be on the bench), Hedo might actually be more aggressive on the offensive end.

a)focused
b) as if he was TRYING
c) and most importantly.....he seemed to be part of the team

So, now DD playing 20 minutes off the bench is OK, but in November it was a sacrilege, right?

Idiots. Rookie shouldn't have been starting, not until he's proven that he is better than the other guards on the roster, of whom at least two (Wright and Weems) have been consistently better two-way players all season long. But no, we had to develop the rook no matter what...

Under these circumstances, it might seem the right decision to bench him couple of more games..However, he gotta start in playoffs games, IMO..

-I believe we will see a different and better Hedo during the playofss. He will try to prove himself.

-If Toronto wants to get rid of him in the summer with a trade benching him won't help either.
