Arrow Smith: Having Calderon and Jack on the roster come October not such a bad thing

Hmm.
Indyís out of the market for a point guard and Toronto still has two.

Oh, woe is them?

I donít think so.

As you well know, the Pacers had talked to the Raptors a handful of times, they couldnít work out a suitable deal so Indy moved on and got themselves a pretty good young guard.

Good for them.

Whatís it mean here?

Nothing.

Iím sure Bryan will still field calls about Calderon Ė and Jack Ė and while so many of you refuse to believe it, there are people in the game smarter than us who think Joseís pretty good.

Whether a deal gets done or not is impossible to say, I suspect itíll be harder now with one natural trade partner no longer looking but Iím sure efforts will be made. But what if nothing happens? Is that a calamity?

Not in the least.

Iíve said all along that I didnít think they ďhadĒ to trade one of the guards but that they would try but going to camp with both Calderon and Jack is not a bad thing by any stretch of the imagination.

Itíll be up to Jay to figure out whoís best as a starter and whoís best coming off the bench and thatís what coaches get the big bucks to do. Me? Iím fine with two of them being here, as long as thereís a clear-cut distinction in the minds of all the players and coaches who has what role.

The reason for moving one of the guards was to get something back to fill other holes, like at the three and the five, even if such a move would weaken them at the point.

If nothing happens there, guess Bryan will have to find other ways to address those other points of concern.

How many players do we currently have on the roster? Don't we have way too many players?

If you really want to count Dwayne Jones... who should be waived within the next three days.

A player in the D-league is still on the 15-man roster, just not on the 12-man active list. Still need a roster spot for Alabi. Jones will be waived, and if anyone else is brought in (net increase in players in a trade), I expect either a) Dorsey to be waived or b) a package of expirings to net us a single player (and thus reduce roster size).

I'd agree.

I think with all the negativity surrounding his name, he's going to come in with a chip on his shoulder like he did that year he had with TJ.

If there's no solid deal on the table, which I'm fairly sure there won't be, I wanna give JC another chance. Guy deserves it.

If we didn't have Barbosa ...... Jack and Jose would work but we have him.
He will take too many minutes at SG if he does with them both.
Plus Barbosa is the natural to play PG on run and gun.

if we hear news about him working on his defense, then I'd love to keep a talented pure pg on this team.

Barbosa is a perfect compliment to Jose on defence..... he may get blown by often too, but at least he puts ball pressure on and gives the threat of turnovers....

I would still rather have Calderon gone. However with Pizza Boi and Rupaul gone I think Calderon will play much better because he will have the ball more. He is still a liability on defence but having those two gone will only help him offensively.

I don't get it maybe... but I don't See Barbosa playing lots of PG for this team. Everyone keeps listing him at PG but I doubt it. Dragic was the back-up to Nash mostly. So if Barbosa is playing SG mostly, then who plays PG if Jose leaves? Jack and Banks? I don't think they will want Banks playing very much, and now that Indy is out, and Charlotte blows goats, Jose isn't going anywhere if you ask me.

And why do they need to get out from under his salary? It's not a lack of money or the tax... it's not cap flexibility at the moment since there's nobody else to spend it on. Who could they even use the TPE on at this point? In addition, Collison is gone, there's no big name point guard to trade for or sign. And Jose is going to be worth more next summer almost assuredly (one less year and he no doubt plays better)... or worth the same. So... why does everyone think he's going somewhere still?

And do you put Jose as a back-up if all things equal between him and Jack? He's the starting PG almost assuredly. Deal with it.

The Raps need Jose's outside shooting IMO - unless he's swapped for somebody else with an outside shot. Bargs will get smothered by doubles if the floor isn't properly spread, and while Jack can knock down 3s, he's not as consistant from outside as Jose.

You are right, he is no PG. But on D he can't guard SGs...

I had an idea. Weems was forced to handle ball a lot in SL. In documentary he even referred himself as PG couple times. His court vision is ok and dribble passable.

Second unit COULD feature Weems and Barbosa as guards. Very unlikely experiment considering Triano...

So generally it will be Jack/Jose playing with Barbosa. Add Derozan or Weems at SF, Kleiza or Wright at PF and you have your smallball.

In hindsight, we may be complaining about losing Jose, a pure and talented pg.

Then again, no defense!!!
