Arrow Smith: Has Weems made Wright expendable?

Quote:
Here’s something to chew on.

Is Sonny Weems making Antoine Wright expendable?

When it comes time to make the summer roster moves – and I sure hope it’s not as a crazy as last summer – do you think Bryan Colangelo’s going to look at the progress Weems has made this season and think, ‘hey, I’ve got Weems and DeRozan and Turkoglu and Belinelli all under contract; do I have room to bring Antoine back at any price?”

I bet he does ask that of himself and, to me, it’s going to be hard decision to make because I quite like what Wright’s been bringing to the table for most of the season. Weems, however, has been one of the best surprises of the season and the Raptors really like what he brings and the promise that he shows.

So the harsh reality is there may not be room for Wright here next season unless Bryan finds a way to divest himself of one of those other four and even then, the GM may want to seek someone he thinks is better as a free agent rather than re-sign Antoine.

What would I do?

As much as I wouldn’t want to, I’d probably roll the dice and let Wright walk barring any other transactions.

Tough call, though. A very tough one

The obvious is....keep Wright and try to find a taker for Turk.

From a playing time stand point, I'd like to see DeRozan about 30 mins for him to continue developing so that really would cut into the other wing's playing time

From a roster stand point, I'd try to keep Wright because you need that dependable wing defender until DeRozan develops into that.

NO he hasn't. Wright and Weems are two good players that make our starting line-up really good defensively. I think we need them both back next year as well

i agree. belis been a disappointment to us this year with his inconsistency problems. he wouldnt get any significant time with us anyways w/ the rotation we have. This was apparantly the biggest factor of why he signed with TO, so if he doesnt get time he will prob bolt on us

Obviously Wright's value to the Raptors depends on what happens in the off-season and who is available. A guy like Wright is always expendable, he is an average player and not getting better.

Agree guys ...

I like Wright, but he can't dribble. Good guy to have on the bench. It depends on the cost.

Seriosly we need to unload Turk to any team at any price so we can have the 4 wings Weems, DeRozan, Beli & Wright share the minutes!

Because together the are just a better fit for this team!

Beli gives us 3 point shooting, passing lane defense & fast break offence & can pass the ball...
DeRozan gives us an Ally oop threat a good midrang game & gets to the foul line a ton when on...
Weems has the best mid-rang game on the team & gets his fair share of rebounds & steals...
& Wright plays sound defence, Has veteran savy & can hit a game winning shot...

They all bring something different!

We absolutly don't need Turk anymore!

Although I can say that these 4 wings possibly wouldn't be here if we didn't trade for Turk so I thank him for that

As far as resigning Wright it doesn't matter to me what we pay Wright if Turk is gone LOL

Does anyone think we can unload Turk with Bosh if he isn't coming back?

No.

30 Million dollars in contracts, with Bosh signed for 6yrs and Turk still with 4yrs remaining on his deal. Not gonna happen. Jose maybe, but even his contract would be difficult to add to a deal.

Man we're gonna be with Turk for at least a few more seasons. We'll porbably get someone to take him in the last year of his contract, hopefully sooner. Dude is a $10 million dollar bench player. So fucked up.

Re-sign Weems. He is a solid guard. Exceptional mid range j, athletic, can finish in traffic. Needs to improve they way he shows his hands on perimeter d and free throw shooting.

If those 4 are the wings for the Raps next season, they'll have a top 10 draft pick in 2011, particularly if Bosh is gone. Maybe that is a good thing though, get a couple high picks and rebuild the franchise. None of those guys is a legitimate scoring option on the wing, unless Weems and DeRozan have a miracle off-season and become much more of a threat shooting the ball. DeRozan and Weems are the only guys out of the current group that I would bring back for sure.
