Smith: As good as it gets for Jose

Quote:

No, I donít remember Jose Calderon playing as well at both ends of the court in a game this year, for sure, and maybe not for a season or two.

That was a clinic.

And Iím not sure what was more impressive: The points, the assists, the rebounds or the way he defended Chris Paul.

You know, and I have hammered it home enough that youíd better, that defence is never about one guy but the job Jose did keeping Paul in front of him was as good as heís done in a very long time.

And letís go through the last four games, all against very, very good teams.

Paul: seven and five.

Jason Kidd: Six and seven.

Steve Nash: Seven and 11.

Derrick Rose: Thirty-two (19 in the fourth) and 10. And Toronto won.

I donít think you can say starting point guards have killed the Raptors as theyíve gone 2-2 against quality opponents in their last four.

I'm genuinely happy watching Jose kill it again.

He's a good dude and a talented PG. The more defence you put around him the more he'll be motivated to do such a good job at keeping his man in front of him.

Team Jose is quite pleased by this turn of events. We would issue a statement, but we're too drunk from Calde-brations.

Ex2k 03-02-2011 09:34 AM

He's played great this season... i really dont want to trade him just incase we draft a PG this summer... he would be a great mentor and would be willing to let him play out his contract and then resign him to a lower contract ...

retire in a raps jersey jose!

And, on a more sober note, we absolutely must retain Jose for this team to make any progress next season, even if Irving is drafted (all that assuming there is a next season).

RAPMAN 03-02-2011 10:20 AM

Yesterday's game was a block party. Amir Johnson with 7 blocks, James Johnson with 2 blocks, and Ed Davis altering shots in the paint. When Ed Davis bulks up and becomes more of a consistent force in the paint, can you hide Jose defensive defiences with a front court of Amir, James, and Ed Davis:

“This team is great a bunch of young guys who will get in it when someone gets beat and rotate,” Johnson said.

“They helped me so I had to help them.

“We have scorers, that’s easy. The other end, stopping people, that’s the hard part of basketball.”

Toronto has scored 50 or more points in the paint four consecutive games, the first time the team has done that since March 2003.
now that is a feat, and opponents were pretty good

I'd also really like to continue having Jose as part of the team. Let's be honest. PG / the starting PG has been the LEAST of our concerns this season. If we manage to draft a stud young Pg, then move Jose to the backup and everything's kosher.

you must have been watching a diffrent Calderon, because the one on our team has been playing like shit all year. The guy lost his shooting abilities, and usually just adds assists. Having a season high 22 points says it all

m5racer 03-02-2011 10:38 AM

Wow Jose has a few good games and now everyone is like "we must keep Jose" why would we trade him.....

This guy has been horrible all season ( and even last season too), he has a few good games and now we "can't trade Jose, it would be a mistake"....

BAND WAGON fans suck!

Well, Jose is averaging 11 assist per game in the last 3 months. Not saying that he has been playing particulary well because stats are stats but I would say that he is probably leading the league in that category in that span of time. Thats not "horrible" at all.

b55bgc 03-02-2011 10:56 AM

I absolutely love James Johnson's attitude. He could be one of those guys in the locker room who speaks up and makes guys accountable.

You sound like you're harping on some of the bad games he's had and totally ignoring the rest.

Fact: jose has been decent this year, in spite of shooting poorly through stretches and playing reserved. Yes in spite of this he's still been one of our better players.

I fucking shudder when i watch the other guys (Bayless, Barbosa, any other guard) here run the offense. The difference is night and day.

Snooch 03-02-2011 11:05 AM

on a team with alot of young guys you need a veteran pg to get guys into the right position and set up plays.

Jose is that guy.

MikeToronto 03-02-2011 11:50 AM

On "bandwagon fans comment" - please note that people who support Jose (especially those who've spoken out in this thread) have been supporting him through troubled times as well, thus being the exact opposite of the bandwagon fans. Please, get your facts straight before throwing labels around. :(

At this point in time, it's become increasingly clear, at least to me, that the perceived defensive weakness of Calderon is easily overcome on a team that gives a consistent defensive effort, while his ability to run the team offensively is easily at the top of what this league has to offer. Co-incidentally, ask our young ones (Amir, DeRozan, Davis) whom they'd prefer to have as a distributor on this team - and you will probably hear Jose's name shouted back right away. If the Raps want to develop young players, having a leader like Calderon is huge.

carp 03-02-2011 11:53 AM

It's all about health..... the question is, how much do you want to bank on his continued good health?

Jose has the offensive skills to be one of the top offensive facilitators (not top pg's, big difference) and it's shown with his absence at times. For all the Kyrie hopefuls that think he'll just come in and save us, look at Washington. This team just needs to stockpile best available for a while and wait for a point in time to make a major move to acquire bigtime talent, if it doesn't eventually emerge from within.

In the meantime, let's hope Jose stays healthy while this team continues to grow and develop. He's done wonders for Amir's game already.

Even though I made a "The need to trade Jose thread" a while ago, I still have had my doubts, I've always been worried that we trade Jose away then he plays like he has for the past couple of months for the rest of his career, a la Steve Nash type assist numbers....

I like Jose & I was thinking he might have been traded at the deadline, but if he continues to play like he has we will not be trading him!!

& thats fine with me:dancing:

Now, THAT was a bandwagon fan. ;)

carp 03-02-2011 12:03 PM

Fans need to be more patient.... Bayless is two years away from being a good pg, if he does become one..... drafting kyrie is still a crapshoot, he hasn't been healthy to show what he can really do, not do.... and Jose is s positive team-oriented guy that is all about winning.
