BAND WAGON fans suck!
I agree to some degree. He should be gone after the season imo. Even Jack Armstrong on the radio yesterday said the PG situation is one of the main positions that needs to be addressed in the offseason. He said Calderon won't be here when this team is ready to do something in the playoffs so if a move can be made it should be seriously considered. He said Raps main concerns should be the 1 & 5 spots.

I will disagree with you on one front....horrible season? I don't think he's had a great season (numbers lie sometimes) but overall he's played better then i expected and at least he's remained relatively healthy.

We have no real indication that Bayless is going to stick with the Raps beyond this season.

I was really impressed with Jose these past few games...He seems to have some more fire and showing some serious stuff.

I never doubted he had the ability to be great, it was execution, injury and the question of athleticism.

He has shown himself to have more speed and quickness than I previously thought. I hope to see more of it before I want to keep him.

Right now I am transitioning from "We will never be able to trade him" to "Hey he might have some real value"

so it's pretty likely he'll be here for the QO year too..... I don't see the need to gush over Kyrie Irving. Best available talent is far more valuable at this point, given that this team is needing a stud regardless of position.

Best available talent is probably Irving, which means we likely won't get him anyway.

Man if his contract wasn't so shitty, I would take him ANYDAY as a backup point guard or as a starter if we draft a SF this summer.

At this point in time, it's become increasingly clear, at least to me, that the perceived defensive weakness of Calderon is easily overcome on a team that gives a consistent defensive effort, while his ability to run the team offensively is easily at the top of what this league has to offer. Co-incidentally, ask our young ones (Amir, DeRozan, Davis) whom they'd prefer to have as a distributor on this team - and you will probably hear Jose's name shouted back right away. If the Raps want to develop young players, having a leader like Calderon is huge.
Preach it, Mike!

the members on this forums near-sightedness never ceases to amaze me

sure hes been playing well recently, why wasnt he played like this the past 2 seasons?

fact is hes still the worst starting defensive pg on offence, and an inconsistent shooter, the only consistent aspect of his game is the ability to make smart passes and runs the pick and roll great.

He's played great this season... i really dont want to trade him just incase we draft a PG this summer... he would be a great mentor and would be willing to let him play out his contract and then resign him to a lower contract ...

retire in a raps jersey jose!
if we draft a guard, just have jose come off the bench, I have always trusted Jose with the ball.. he won't turn over the ball and he wan't make bad decisions.. if you have a guy like jose coming off the bench he will kill the second unit pgs

Or that he will pan out as a consistent, quality PG. I'm optimistic about that prospect, but it's certainly not assured and I'd argue that Jack is a MUCH better PG right now.

---------

Regarding Jose - it is funny what a couple good games, and in particular a huuuge 20/15 performance can do for perception. I'd warn everyone to take a big dose of reality -- Jose did NOT torch the "Chris Paul" of the past few seasons that we know. He torched the post knee injury Chris Paul that can't find his rhythm or his shot, is frustrated with himself and, because of this his teammates.

ESPN just today released an article on how Chris Paul is not who he once was, and for those who watched him over the past few years, the dominant Paul that was a mix between Steve Nash and Isiah Thomas/Joe Dumars still hasn't come back from injury:

Regarding the whole "Do we trade Jose?" "Do we not trade Jose?" argument - I was all for trading Jose earlier in the year when we had Jarret Jack. Jack was the better PG of the two IMO - better defender, significantly better at creating his own shot; nowhere near the passer that Jose is but still a very adequate passer himself. Plus there's Jose's legendarily weak hamstring muscles. He hasn't played a complete season in three years.

With that said, Jack did start the season in a serious slump (shooting 39% from the field for us, compared to 48% the year before), and trading Jack [as trading Jose would have been] was addition by subtraction in that it established a firm pecking order at PG, and essentially guaranteed minutes for the starting PG, and it is often better to have a PG who can play 30+ minutes and find his rhythm rather than always looking over his shoulder.

The other benefit of having Jose stay is that I have no doubt that having Jose rather than Jack stay has helped DeRozan, Amir and even Davis' development to a lesser extent. Having such a ball dominant creator like Jose allows DeRozan to not have to dribble too much - one of his biggest weaknesses (aside from 3 point shooting) was and still is to a lesser extent his ballhandling. Jose's passing has also tremendously helped the games of Bargnani and Amir Johnson.
------

Triano did a great job of lighting a fire under Calderon's ass with regard to being an offensive threat. Let's hope it continues. Calderon only scored in double figures three times all of last month, and shot a whopping 34% from the field in March as well. He did average 11 assists, so he was clearly favouring his passing game to the detriment of everything else.
------

So, now that we're in the position we're in, it would be totally pointless tranding Jose unless a similar or better PG comes back in the deal - we'd have a gaping hole at PG. If we end up getting Irving in the draft, then moving Jose would be an imperative to guarantee minutes for our young prospect; barring that, keeping Jose (or perhaps trying to get another PG, like Devin Harris) is the smart move.

I'm sure you mean 2012-2013 for the QO. Because otherwise you'd be wrong, and we can't have that.

Ive liked Jose wince his first game with us in 04/05 when he got subbed into the game for Alston and already brought energy and got the crowd into it.

He's not the fastest PG out there or the best defensively since he gets beat oftne, but he does have his moments. In this day and age I'm not surprised he's getting paid that much, many players are being overpaid than what they really are worth. So I dont think Jose's contract is really that bad its just alright. He has great attitude considering he's been taking out of the starting lineup, and even been in many trade talks and dont forget almost got traded this past summer. With all that he still puts in the effort each night in trying to help his team win. with the way the NBA is I'm sure many players would not even bother trying if they are constantly taken out of the starting lineup, and even almost getting traded. Makes them lose their motivation to even try. Jose is different, he puts that behind him and continues to put in the effort everyday. He's not the best player out there but its a big plus that he's trying each night even when he isn't 100%

Now if he was to be traded, we wouldn't have any player that is able to pass the ball and keep this team together. I'm not too sold on Bayless being the starter since he tries to do too much than he really is capable in single handily bring us back into games after his amazing game against the Pistons. Instead we'll have 2PGs who are more usited for the 2 spot and look for their own shot rather than create for players. Jose has great chemistry with all the teammates and is what keeps this team together. Without Jose we'll be struggling to score points mainly because Bayless and Barbosa will try to do everything themself, and then the team becomes a everyone for them self type thing.
So honestly, I prefer to keep him until his contract ends and hopefully he'll sign to smaller contract by then

He's shooting 45% and 40% from 3. Maybe you can find another reason to cry about him.
