demar has a bad contract? have you seen the contracts around the league?

His contract isn't great but I wouldn't say it's bad either. IMO he's an 8mil player at this point making 9.5mil which by NBA standards isn't that bad and if he improves it's a decent contract overall.

Incredibly smart/strategic move by Masai...DC has now officially become the new regime's (upper management) first safety net

He couldn't bring in Shaw, Hollins, Karl so he's going to keep Casey. also wants to see what Casey can do with a couple of his players.
Team success is 80% players, 20% coaching. Hiring Phil Jackson isn't going to turn this average roster into contenders.

Casey said Gay is adding 10 or 15 lbs to his upper body. Lowry isn't fat anymore. If Demar can shoot the three, and JV has beefed up, look out.

I'm sure Euro ball will be scouted. Bargnani needs a good performance to get moved for a decent return soon. I don't hate the guy like some, but he would be the opposite of the culture they are trying to implement.

Yet why does everything in me say that as his last act of sabotage, Bargnani lays such an egg that his value ends up being around the Level of Charlie Villanueva?

yeah, because that worked so well for colangelo ...
what do you do if we win 47 games next season and casey wins coach of the year?

I think this move signals that a fairly strong rebuild is in the cards.

and Bargnani has added 15 pounds of muscle before every training camp since his rookie season (true fact, check archives of newspapers around that time of the year), he should have been bigger than shaq by now if all that was true ...

Demar has a bad contract. Barring amazing improvement from demar,(i.e. he learns to defend and shoot the 3) You are in denial if you say otherwise.

not really, if he could do those things he'd be a max player. instead he's a 9.5mil player

he's probably overpaid by a little, but for the most part is pretty close to market value, it just feels weird to pay someone almost 10 million who isn't an all-star, but there are a lot of other players in the league with worse contracts

some max players aren't all-stars.

I would question that, imo coaching and the culture is a huge part.. Take away Pop from SAS and they are nowhere near as good of a team as they are now

The problem is Casey came in saying all this crap about him being a touch coach, and if you dont play defense you dont play...

yeah what the fuck happened to that?

The only sure thing this signals is a desire to create an identity based on defense, something Casey achieved to some extent before being asked to focus on offense. Colangelo was never going to see the value in building a team around a strong defense. Masai likely does, particularly as a foundation which can be built upon rather than set to one side as an unfortunate necessity while the sexy scoring punch makes Bargnani a household name.

This is a fine move that offers a starting point without needing to start from scratch. Bring in another coach of any variety and you can guarantee most of us as fans will end up hating that guy sooner rather than later. Getting a new coach is the easiest and largely fakest move done to make fans happy. That's why there are so many firings regardless of records. I feel pretty happy that Masai did not go that route, nor do I think he ever would.
