Default Smith: The Curious Case of Roko Ukic

Quote:
Yes, Anthony Parker has done a good job as the backup point guard most games and itís a role he might play next season. But thatís only if he comes back and thatís not a certainty. I donít know how much theyíll want to pay him, I have no idea if some European team might throw enough money at him to send him back over there but the simple fact is Ukic is under contract next year and Parker isnít.

And say one thing for Ukic: In the dying seconds of a quarter, a half or a game, the dude wants the ball in his hands. Too much, some would say (and there are times I certainly agree) but on a team sorely lacking wing players with the ability to break down their man off the dribble, someone whoíll try it is a welcome sight.

Heís got to get better at it, especially knowing when to get past his man and look for an open teammates, but thatís all part of the learning curve.

The curveís flattening out.
Doug Smith's Toronto Raptors blog

I agree with Doug here, especially since the team is out of it give the kid 20-25 minutes and see if he can be player in this league. Playing AP is all good when you are trying to win games, but the Raps have to know they have no chance to make the playoffs.

I watched a couple of recent raps games and everytime Roko stepped in, i gotta admit that he played pretty bad, was pulled out almost immediately and has not seen the floor since.

Not to justify him but the guy obviously lost confidence which is normal when you get burried down the bench and put back there after every single mistake (+ extremely limited minutes).

Triano just wants to win so bad so he keeps a short leash on Ukic and the starting 5 play 35 mins/game but paradox, in my opinion is that even as a rookie, Roko is more clutch than 90 % of the roster and is better to have him on the floor at the ends of quarters and especially in the 4th. basically, you will win more games with him running it. I think he deserves that chance cuz he never got it, even when he played extremely well, while Jose was out, freakin Solomon, ej Solomon!? started and played more than him. Game after game now this unit as is, is not bringing it and I say just try Ukic , give him more time and whole 4th quarter, see what happens

He isn't very good. He might be a decent backup someday but that's about it imo.

Every Raptors message board calls Smith a douche. Nothing new here.

People said the same thing about Rajon Rondo and Jameer Nelson.

Ukic will be a good starting PG in the league IF HE GETS A CHANCE.

There's no doubt about it.

He's talented and works hard to improve, i dare to say that if you compare his rookie season and that of Bargnani (#1 pock), he looks more solid mentally even in this crappy environnement and roster.

BTW his rookie performances vs. Magic and Spurs are the ONLY, I repeat: the ONLY things worth mentionning about the Raptors this season.

Time will tell... Jeff stick to GM talks

Why, because i don't think Ukic is our future?

Yet you predict he'll be a starter when he hasn't shown any signs of ever being a starter. One of us is right, but at this point who the fuck knows. Certainly not you. So perhaps you should take your own arrogant advice.

I think he showed enough in the games against Magic and the Spurs he could be a starter in the league someday, but that is entirely dependent on if he can develop a jump shot. He also has to become a better decision maker but that comes from experience.

Well if 2 games makes you think he will be a starter it shows how much we suck. He needs to be consistent to be a starter

Yes, but he is a rookie, how many players are consistent in their rookie years. Plus he hasn't had consistent run of games, it's always minutes here and there.

I don't predict he'll be a starter any time soon. Eventually yes. I'm not arrogant and sorry if thats how you see it, it just seems weird to me that you're constantly hot-cold, trade him-love him on different players based on your subjectivity. Especially bizarre is constantly putting down a hard-working rookie like ukic who's playing minimum minutes on this team full of holes... You're much more at home discussing BC, MLSE, drafts and trades

Also, if a showing sign is not playing as a rookie in the 4th Q, making clutch plays while overpaid "stars" and veterans on the team watch and almost single handedly getting the only 2 quality wins for this team...then what are your signs? numbers? posting 20 pts and 5 rebounds in a losing effort?

If a rookie is not the future, who is? Of course Bargnani will be, well maybe..after 2or 3 more years, if this or if that.

I wanna have this conversation in 3 years anyways.

Gurk, how do you know he's not consistent with minutes here and there? I just say let him play once 25-30 mins of the game, especially at this point, you got nothing to lose.
