Arrow Smith: Calderon should be back in the starting lineup very soon

Quote:
Every indication I’m getting is that, yes, Jose Calderon will be back in uniform tomorrow night in Orlando; it’s the been the target date for about a week now and there have been no setbacks along the way.

Today’s practice is the last hurdle and it’s expected he’ll clear it with no problem.

So, what to do?

Well, the other indication I’ve been getting is that they will try to keep him on some minutes limit for at least the first few games (no one’s saying what that limit is) and that has to mean coming off the bench.

For now.

But eventually, and much to the chagrin of so many of you it makes me laugh, he’ll start again. As he should.

The first unit runs better when he’s in there running the screen-roll or spotting up in the corner as a more dangerous shooter than Jarrett Jack.

The second unit runs better with Jack at his tempo playing alongside Weems and Johnson and DeRozan every now and then.

Defensively, it’s a wash, really. The slight changes to the system – more ball pressure higher in halfcourt sets – puts the onus on the wings and bigs and they’ve been doing a pretty good job helping when necessary.

It really doesn’t matter who’s out there at the top if the help’s there, and it has been.

There will be blow-bys, folks, lots of them. There have been in the last dozen games but, shockingly, they haven’t been pointed out to me every single time.

I think you want your best ball-handler and best shooting point guard on the floor against other starters, at least at the beginning of the game. And I defy anyone to suggest – after watching the last dozen games – to suggest that isn’t Calderon.

How long it takes to get back to the regular rotation remains to be seen. It might be three games, it might be five. But it’s got to happen.

From Doug Smith's Blog. The rest can be read here.

Calderon should be given every opportunity to earn his starting spot, but it shouldn't just be handed back to him. He has to show that he can be better or just as effective as Jack has been in his absence. If they truly are a wash defensively as Doug says and the tweak of picking up the ball handlers a bit earlier is really what is making the difference, then it won't be a problem for Jose to step up.
Staying healthy might prove to be a tougher task.

Frankly, Jose's best ball was played when he was chasing down that starting spot. Let's get him hungry again.
The lack of internal competition has been a constant criticism of many people on this board. The guard spots are probably the only positions where competition for PT is realistic. I say let 'em go at it and may the best man win.

I think a big concern of mine is that we are going to see Jack eat up minutes at the 2guard spot.

I really like the Weems Belli Hedo Dero Wright mix and match rotation at the wings. Really wouldn't like to see these guys lose PT to Jack

Until Weems can consistently hit jump shots, he shouldn't play
He can't hit a 5 footer. It's embarassing. So what he can jump really hight, but he shoot horribly. When we are in a offensive set, half court play, no one has to guard him because he can't do shit. We don't run the ball nearly enough for him to be getting minutes except in blowouts. just my two cents.

You may be right I dunno Weems is at 44% shooting so he is hitting something. He rarely turns the ball over so he isn't detering much.

I'm just saying I'd rather see Belli and Weems fight for time than just conviently put Jack at the 2guard spot. I hate Jack at the 2guard spot and always have. I think it ruins the flow of the game and you don't see much aggresiveness going around just my take and opinion is all. Consider the fact you also have to give Dero time things get tight at the wing position and its just Jack I'd love not to see there.

Now he'll be there that is all

The only time Jack should see the 2 is at the end of the game for his FT shooting and to have another guy that can handle the ball. Just get Jack to share his minutes with Jose and Banks right now. When Jose is up to speed jack should only get about 20-25 minutes at the pg spot. We are so much beter with DD, Weems, Beli and evev Wright getting minutes at the 2 spot.

Less time for our best defensive player = more losses.

It's not that Calderon isn't a better player, he's a hell of alot worse at defence that Marcus Banks.

I'd rather see Calderon/Banks than Calderon/Jack to be honest. But why go away from what's working?? Right when we're getting back on track and have some momentum and a decent spot in the standings... damnit.
