Smith: Best Case Scenario For Raptors
Someone wrote in to Doug today about his opinion about what the "best case" scenario for the Raptors this summer regarding their roster.

Doug had to say this:

I read your blog everyday, I haven't gotten a response yet, and am looking forward,

Marc C, Scarborough

Doug: The best-case scenario in August? They will have at least one new starter at the two-three spots, Jose Calderon will be signed to a five-year deal worth between $33-$40 million and they’ll have a better fourth big man behind Bosh, Bargnani and Rasho. Or a good third big man behind Bosh and Bargnani.

Not sure what free agents you’re referring to: On the Raptors? Well, there’s only one, Delfino. And I guess second by default goes to The Gangster.

League wide? Let’s see who opts out of their contracts before we compile any list.

Now I read somewhere else today (can't remember where) but someone mentioned that they didn't think that Ford would be traded until after the Olympics incase Jose gets injured while playing for Spain this summer. Do you think that's too late to wait or a smart decision if they do in fact wait till then before they deal Ford? :confused2:

thats BS Doc.

there is no timeline for that shit, it will happen when it can happen

If Ford is traded, I'd expect it to be on draft night or shortly thereafter. Waiting to see of Calderon is injured at the Olympics is ridiculous - what if Bosh gets injured there? Or any other player, for that matter?

No worries, he likely won't be playing anyways. Or at least I hope Colangelo Sr. does us a favour and leaves him off the squad this summer. :suspicious:

I'd rather see Clady not playing there either, but that's not going to happen. :(

Dr. J. Naismith 05-30-2008 11:46 AM

Damn Olympics and their allowing of professional athletes to compete. ;)

JayJayW 05-30-2008 11:47 AM

bosh barely gets mins in the olympics anyways

Superjudge 05-30-2008 11:54 AM

cuz he's shitty and soft.

Olympics and World/Euro championships are the reasons it kinda sucks to have an "international" team. Probably the only reasons, come to think of it.

In case of Calderon, assuming he is retained and Ford is traded, it's going to be especially true, considering that he is going to start and play at least 10 more minutes per game than when he was splitting his PT with TJ.

Superjudge 05-30-2008 01:54 PM

Jesus, it's like 5 games.

You think they don't run more playing pick up????

Cme on man, don't buy into that shit, if they ain't doing it on tv, they are doing it at the YMCA.

MikeToronto 05-30-2008 02:54 PM

SJ, I'd like to disagree. I am sure it's not 5 games (it'd be more like 20 for any team that reaches the gold-medal game), and there is also a pre-tournament camp to think about.

It has been statistically proven that NBA players who participate in national team competitions over the summer months usually play a sub-par season following that. Americans might be getting off lighter because of the depth of that team, but all the other nationals will play heavy minutes for their teams, like Rasho, Calderon, Garbo (if he plays). Even Delfino will be fairly tired come September.

BTW, Rasho could be getting a double-whammy in case Slovenia qualifies in June.

Same guys play pick up ball every day, same work out.

Same wear and tear.

I don't buy it man.

I still love you Mike.

MikeToronto 05-30-2008 04:13 PM

SJ, we will see next season, won't we? ;)

it definitely didn't help bargnani, that's for sure ...
It's a lot more than just the games themselves, it's the mental fatigue, the travel etc The games are a lot more physical than a random pickup game too. And the truth is that older players need the time off to recover their bodies. On the other hand, you have the experience gained in such competitions, a gold medal game carries more pressure than any NBA playoff game etc.

Personally I'd like our players to stay home - but it's never going to happen.
