Default Smitch says Raptors wanted him to take a different approach with Bargnani

Quote:
Mitchell was admittedly hard on several players during his time in Toronto, including Jose Calderon and Chris Bosh. He said management discouraged him from taking the same approach with Bargnani, who the Raptors took first overall in the 2006 draft.

“A lot of people in the upper management felt like that was the wrong technique,” he said. “And I blame myself from the standpoint that I didn’t articulate. But I didn’t feel like I needed to as a coach.”

Mitchell, who coached Toronto from 2004 through 2008, said he set aside one 10-game stretch where he forbade Bargnani from taking a three-point shot. He said he went so far as to tell the young Italian he would remove him from the game if he stopped to shoot from beyond the arc.

“My thing was, I wanted him to understand he used the three-pointer as a crutch,” he said. “He relied on it too much. I wanted him to use the three-pointer as a weapon. I wanted him to realize that, from 17 feet in, in one dribble, Andrea could get anywhere on the basketball court.”

Mitchell, who has spoken of management’s interference before, would not go into the specifics of what upper management told him. He would not offer names.

“Maybe, looking back, if I ever coach again and I want to do something like that, I’ll sit down with the general manager first and say, ‘this is what I want to do, this is why I’m going to do it, and after these 10 games, I’m going to turn him loose,’” he said. “That’s how Jose got better. I turned him loose. Chris Bosh. I turned him loose: ‘You all go play, I’ve done my job.’”

Does Mitchell think things would have worked out differently with Bargnani if he had been allowed to do the job the way he wanted?

“I would have liked to have seen it,” Mitchell said. “Because Andrea has tremendous talent.”

A coach has to have some integrity. He's basically saying that he was knowingly bad at his job because that was safer. I mean, i get it, that's very human and down to earth. Everyone wants to keep getting paid. But that's why he's not a top tier coach.

I remember when Bargnani was not allowed to shoot threes. I think it was the start of hs third season. Just before Sam got fired. And this is probably a big reason he got fired. But Andrea was showing real promise and playing aggressively. Although he also sat on the bench more than he wanted to.

Casey should have told him that he'd lose minutes if he didn't grab 2 rebs each quarter.

Smitch says a lot of things nowadays, rarely are they even negative as they pertain to his own accountability.

I dislike it when management interferes with coaching. Why did you hire him if your not going to let him do things his own way? If your not happy with him, fire him but don't interfere with his job.

He probably could have turned Barny into a basketball player if he was given the chance. Apparently Barney with his 99/100 personality "king" rating wasn't mentally strong enough to be coached like a regular player. Collangelo impacted Barney's career in a very negative way. He created different expectations and different rules for him then that of his peers - done like dinner.

Smitch is right, and Casey this year used the three point threat of Bargnani as a crutch... The opposite of what Smitch had instilled in him. It's Casey's crap offense that breeds a lack of movement both with and without the ball. It's Emotion offense, take what shot you feel like. Genius.

It's AB's fault for not standing up and calling out Casey behind closed doors. He handled it poorly.

The biggest mistake is the fact that we drafted a little bitch with the first overall pick. A first pick should be a guy mentally tough enough to be coached like a man. Andrea on the other hand, had to apparently be coached like a 7 year old child, which thus allowed him to stay the exact say player...a little baby that does not put forth an effort in game, and, because he's making bank, dosnt ever need to put forth a real effort again.

oh dont misunderstand, I dont disagree, I just find Mitchell in general, very open to talking about how right he always was. I like him too.... just seems to me anyhow that he does that.

+1

BC will not acquire players with character issues, but will draft babies with the no. 1 pick. The biggest mistake of BC was drafting Andrea no. 1. Huge mistakes like Hedo and JO was because of the shortfall of AB becoming the No. 2 behind Bosh.

BC likes to gather scrubs and package then to us as the big thing, and the toronto basketball media push the "vision" down our throats.
But the fans, true fans, no the difference.

... drafting players who have the "potential" to be :LIKE, SIMILAR ... a COPY: of an established players style and talent is a recipe for failure of that draftee to develop and exploit their own gifts.

see: all the MJ copies, KG copies, KB copies etc., etc., etc ...

Its the domain of the teams scouts to seek out that unique individual, with a singular style that has a better than average chance at picking a winner in the draft. Consensus #1's in weak drafts seem to muddle along.
