Smitch Might Be Back Coaching Soon

Rumours are that Sam's being considered for University of Georgia vacancy in the NCAA. Bobby Knight is also apparently being considered too.

College ball might be a nice change for Sam. I hope he's being seriously considered.

that's the first person I thought of when Georgia fired their coach.

This would be the first time a former Raptors coach found employment somewhere else as a head coach. Even if it's just college.

Yup and Darrell Walker coached the Wiz, Brendan Malone coached the Cavs and Kevin O'Neill coached Arizona and was supposed to take over for Lute Olsen until they had a falling out.

Mitchell will have absolutely no problem getting a job. In fact he probably looks more appealing after the firing.

Indeed. There is a tiny bit of satisfaction, which is heavily outweighed by the team sucking, but nonetheless. a tiny bit of satisfaction in seeing the team plunder after Mitch was fired. Their were just so many Smitch-haters who have no real idea what basketball coaching is about, and it's nice having the told-you-so card that comes with being a huge Sam Mitchell fan.

Yes Mitchell was inexperienced, and yes he made quite a few coaching mistakes because of that inexperience. But he always demanded the respect of his players, and for the most part he got that. And because of that, he always got their best efforts.
Did he lose the team? Maybe. Was it to early to tell? Definitely. Would we have a better record with him still at the helm? There is no doubt in my mind.

With the recent team's struggles, it only makes it more clear in my mind that he never had the appropriate lead assistant helping him out, which is what a inexperienced head coach needs.

Didn't Lenny Wilkens coach Knicks after Raptors?

lonewolfpoet 02-04-2009 11:24 AM

Sorry to beat a dead horse, didn't read the rest of the posts before I replied.

I love reading the hagiography of Sam Mitchell!

Acie 02-04-2009 11:43 AM

I love how I don't have to read how great a coach Triano is anymore.

I love how no one is talking about our new system anymore.

I love that no one is talking about having fun and players not having to look over their shoulders anymore.

I love how no one is mentioning that he just needs some time because the more time that passes, the worse the team looks.

Raptorman 02-04-2009 11:48 AM

HAHHA..I stand corrected...and you are correct in your assumption DB.

What I meant was a semi-successful coaching job.

PS. I'd love to see Smitch coach again to see if it was just hatin' around here.

I have problems with everything that I've bolded here.

He always got their best efforts?? If that's the case then we've been watching 2 different Raps teams over the past 5 years.

Too early to tell? The team stumbled into the playoffs at the end of last season and looked listless THIS season.

We'd have a better record right now with him at the helm? HOW???? With no Jose and JO? The guy isn't Jesus lol... he can't work miracles.

Blaming his failings on the lack of a lead assistant is just... weak.

Sorry... I don't buy it.

I still think that he's a good coach.

I've given many reasons why over the past weeks.... if you choose not to see those reasons, boil everything down to his record and discard the fact that 2 MAJOR components have been missing for a large chunk of the season then that's fine.

The funny thing is that I heard EVERY excuse in the book for the better part of 4 seasons as people defended Sam...

Jay couldn't get 10 games under his belt without you guys ripping him apart lol.

Whoa TO. My memory is pretty good, and i clearly remember the majority of the forum being way more difficult on Sam than people have been on Jay.

Way more.

sure both coaches have their resident defenders, but by in large, Mitchell was ripped and Triano not so much.

Oh, I've read your reasons.

Just surprised how all of the Triano is the greatest thing since sliced bread talk has died down.

I'm mean people were even claiming he was doing a good job because we moved up in the NBA power rankings...
