Slam: 5 trades that should happen before the season starts

Trade No. 4:
Raptors Acquire: Monta Ellis
Warriors Acquire: Andrea Bargnani, Jarryd Bayless

The Financials

This one’s easy. Both teams are under the cap, so they can make an unbalanced deal if need be. However, Ellis is only due about $2 million more than Bargnani this season, and Bayless’ $3 million does nothing to throw the deal off.

What’s In It For Toronto
The Raptors drafted center Jonas Valanciunas with the 5th overall pick this season, and with Ed Davis cemented at power forward, they’re set down low. This leaves Bargnani as something of an odd-man-out. They have a young star in shooting guard DeMar DeRozan, and pairing him with Ellis would be really scary. Plus, if they want to go small, they’d still have point guard Jose Calderon, who they could start with Ellis at the two and DeRozan at the three.

What’s In It For Golden State
It’s beginning to seem like an inevitability that Ellis will be leaving the Warriors either via trade or free agency a year from now, so they might as well deal him while they can. Bargnani is a horrific defender, but the team is full of them, and pairing him with David Lee in the post would be an awesome move. Bayless hasn’t shown much in his NBA career, but could do something if he got a shot at guard alongside Stephen Curry while being coached by former point guard Mark Jackson. With rookie Klay Thompson and Dorell Wright ready for boosts in minutes, this trade makes a lot of sense.

I would!

DanH 12-06-2011 04:19 PM

I'd do it. Not a huge fan of Ellis, but neither am I a huge fan of Bargnani or Bayless. A Jose-Demar-Monta backcourt rotation would be pretty fun to watch (offensively, anyway).

Then running a frontcourt of Val, Davis, Amir, Alabi, JJ, and next year's draft pick at SF could go well for us.

ellis has become a much mature player now since the birth of his son. he's been leading GS by example and i would love to see his toughness on our roster

In a heartbeat. And if we could somehow get Barnes in the draft!

Ellis
Derozan
Barnes
Davis
Val

And if we don't get Barnes we'd have capspace to maybe go after a PG in free agency and play Ellis at SG, Derozan at SF??

DDUnreal 12-06-2011 04:25 PM

Derozan would get killed at SF

Someguy again 12-06-2011 04:35 PM

golden state will probably reject.

david lee and bargnani as the frontcourt? :face4:

10gizzle 12-06-2011 04:45 PM

It would definitely be exciting.

Not every team needs to fit the mold of having a pass first PG.

Ellis - Calderon
Derozan - Barbosa
Johnson - ________
Davis - Johnson
_____ - _________

That kills me as well.

I think they would have to throw in Demar to make it work fairly, in which case a little more should come back this way in a pick at least. If a strong defender was paired with Ellis it could work. But then keeping Ellis would be a question. So it's just not going to happen.

merlin2049er 12-06-2011 04:52 PM

How about Andris Biedrins?

TORaptor4Ever 12-06-2011 04:55 PM

I've wanted this trade to happen for about 3 years now. :sigh:

It was the trade that we NEEDED to happen when Bosh was still here to turn us into a quality team.

I'd still take it now in a heartbeat though. Without question.

10gizzle 12-06-2011 04:56 PM

Ellis + Biedrins

for

Bargnani + Calderon

They get Bargs and get an expiring for Biedrins contract.

Get it done.

I would love to start ripping daily on Ellis' D.... lol... do it! I'm sure most won't have the stones to do so given Ellis being.... um.... american?

It's a fair deal, but I doubt it happens.

DocHoliday99 12-06-2011 05:43 PM

Ed Davis is not cemented at PF. Bargs is not a center. Lee and Bargs would be a nightmare. Ellis would not help defensively. DD can play SF but seems better suited defensively for the SG. Why would GS do this? For players the author admits suffers terrible D or won't go anywhere? Yep, makes perfect sense.

DocHoliday99 12-06-2011 05:46 PM

Besides, Bargs will be fine defensively. Ed Davis is not the savior at PF as some seem to make him look like. JV / Bargs is a better combination IMO than JV / Davis. Ellis is a horrid defender. Bayless definitely will improve and is showing so.

I agree... I think Amir is good enough as a backup that we should be looking to swap Ed out with a good young SF like Batum or George.... or someone else....

LX 12-06-2011 05:51 PM

I'm guessing, just guessing that Ed is a better fit for Casey than Andrea.

box92 12-06-2011 05:52 PM

dont think this would happen, and could we have steph curry instead? throw in a 2014 top 5 protected :D

it's a solid guess... though my guess is the opposite. I don't think Ed can handle the C spot like a Chandler.... but it's just an opinion.

Ed doesn't have to be a "saviour"... he just has to act like a PF and rebound the ball, protect the rim and score down low.

Davis showed more on D in 1 season than Bargs has in 7.

I take my chances with him any day of the week.
