SI's 2008-2009 Predictions

Here are some interesting parts.

6. What team will be the biggest flop?

Aschburner: 76ers. Loved the Brand signing, but the enthusiasm and confidence of Sixers fans seems to have swelled beyond this club's capabilities. Brand has to be the elite player we saw two or three years ago, over 100 games or so, for this to work, and that's iffy. The two Andres (Iguodala and Miller) have enough holes in their games that I see Philadelphia scrapping near the bottom of the East bracket, a letdown from preseason hopes.

9. Which coach enters the season on the hottest seat?

Forrester: Sam Mitchell, Raptors. The marriage between Mitchell and GM Bryan Colangelo has never been dreamy. After raising expectations by acquiring Jermaine O'Neal, Colangelo isn't likely to have a lot of patience if the Raptors struggle early.

6 - I completely agree with.

9 - SI has been saying the same thing for two years, and the whole thing about Sam not being BC's guy is completely unfounded. As far as I can see the two have worked well together - certainly better than any other coach/GM duo here in Toronto.

I don't know ... unless the Sixers run into injury problems I don't see that team flopping at all. :confused2:

It won't matter if we the best team in the league or mediocre like we were last season, Sam will always be in the coach hot seat. :cwm34:

he will be in on the hot-seat, but because he's not bryan's man ... If Bryan wanted to fire Sam, he could have done it this spring, and few would have been surprised. Obviously Colangelo has faith in Mitchell - but the reality is that we're supposed to be a better team this year - everbody and their mother agrees on that. If we're not, this might be Sam's last season in Toronto. I doubt he'll get fired during the season, unless we are awful for 15-20 games. If we are something like 5 and 15 after 20, it's unlikely he'll survive.

Agreed milk - every coach is on the hotseat in that respect to some degree. I just think SI completely misses the boat with respect to the working relationship the coach and GM have, and the way that decisions are made by consensus.

Definatley Smitch is on the hotseat, and the 76ers could be a flop but I highly doubt it. But you never know Brand could only play 8 games and get injured....

Prediction: Raptors get off to 3-7 start and Mitchell is gone. Count it.

(Yeah I am ignoring the fact there is no one to replace him with)

This is the first season that Smitch has been given legitimate tools to work with. Look at all his other seasons espescially those under BC.

Year one -- project with surprising success

Year two -- continue to build, with expectations of playoffs

Year three -- ????? <-- I believe that the expecations we spoke of two years ago are finally here. We need to begin seeing results with this team. IF we remain steady with a healthy team (something I can't stress enough) and by steady I mean a first round exit, I think Sam's days are numbered. If we reach round 2? He's safe.

As for Philly, again, the Brand/Miller experiement was tried once. It was not a success. Philly relied on heart and soul last year with Lou Williams and Reggie Evans playing BIG minutes and key minutes. This year they're relegated to bench roles. They remind me alot of the Orlando teams after signing G.Hill and T-Mac. Huge expectations that were never met.

I'll say 6-4 start and he stays

Hmm although I appeared to be right for about the first 7 minutes of the first quarter it looks like my 3-7 prediction (which included the raptors getting blown out tonight) won't hold up. At least Sam didn't have anyone doubling the PG at half court.

moremilk 10-29-2008 10:48 PM

10 games is not enough, unless we get blown every night and finish 1-9 or smth. Bryan doesn't have a quick trigger and he will let Mitchell prove he can do it. Even if we start bad (which doesn't look like it so far), it's reasonable to assume that it takes time to gel the new players.
