Default Simmons' take on the Fields deal

from a piece about the off-season on Grantland - http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8182261/game-nba-thrones-part-i

Quote:
For my single favorite moment of the month: Toronto going all out for Steve Nash, even giving Landry Fields a $19 million poison-pill contract in a desperate attempt to block New York's rumored Steve Nash trade … only the Lakers snared Nash and poor Toronto was stuck with Fields (Fields made just 25.6 percent of his 3s last year and had an astonishingly bad 12.0 PER) leading to a hilarious scenario when the Raptors immediately tried to amnesty Fields's deal even as he was signing it. (Just kidding. I made that up.)

You know what the whole thing reminded me of? The Larry Sanders roast (one of the greatest TV episodes of all time7), when Artie had to book an obscure comedian named Kip Addotta to get Jerry Seinfeld at the roast, only Seinfeld canceled at the last minute, leading to Addotta droning on at the roast as Larry fake-laughed in pure misery. Eventually, he leaned over to Artie for the following exchange:

Larry: "Who the f-ck is that?"
Artie: "That's Kip Addotta."
Larry: "Who's that?"
Larry's agent: "He's the guy we had to get to get Seinfeld."
Larry: "Where's Seinfeld?"
Larry's agent: "The bastard canceled an hour ago."

Basically, Toronto's summer was the Larry Sanders roast, Steve Nash was Jerry Seinfeld, and Landry Fields was Kip Addotta. The good news for Toronto: They salvaged things (a little) by acquiring Lowry, and everyone loves last year's no. 1 pick (Jonas Valanciunas, a stud by all accounts). We don't need to get rid of basketball in Canada just yet.

Landry Fields is no Kip Addotta. He can play, it's not like we signed Steve Novak to a 3 year 20 million dollar contract. The addition of Fields would've been welcomed (by myself, at least) with or without Nash. He can play all over the court, still young, and most importantly a high character guy. He'll be fine.

Agreed his contract is only bad because of the 3rd year.

The whole contract is whack, because a guy that shoots that badly, and has that bad a year going into a contract signing, needs a crazy person to offer him anything like what he got here. The coach went into the offseason asking for shooters, and BC delivered him a guy that shot worse than anybody already here, and he overpayed to get him.

It might work out. But it was fucking dumb. There's no getting around it. I'm only happy that the scenario that might have been in play had the deal for Lowry not worked out, whereby Fields is used to help lure Lin to sign a crazy contract offer, did not play out. And there is room for hope that he rebounds well from a bad season.

We got a shooter in Ross. We aren't Orlando that has a dominant big-man presence already manning the paint to the point where we just need to surround him with shooters. We need all types of players on this team. Rebounds, defenders, scorers, passers. Shooters are only one of the key elements. Landry is a rebounder/defender that can score occasionally.

We got a rookie that can shoot, and a new shiny pg with a pretty good scoring ability. We really could have used someone with more skill than Fields, although I like him as an all-around basketball player, if he can recover from a bad season. I don't like the price tag, and the way the price tag limits the means of getting that skilled player.

If Fields was high on their list of players they wanted to acquire then I can live with it. But that's not what would appear to be the case, particularly when considering what the coach was looking for. It could have been worse, but I worry about missing out on a lot better, and needlessly.

Or they can see through that his bad year was clearly not indicative of what he can do, and was only because of Melo. They knew he's a baller and a young one at at who happens to also be very smart on the court.

I don't care about the money - it's what they had to offer to get him and it's not like it's a contract that cripples the team salary cap wise. He'll almost certainly be a useful player and has the potential (there's that word) to make the contract seem a bargain.

Fields is a good player. Overpaid on paper? Yeah sure but there are a lot worst contracts in the NBA right now. He gets a chance to prove he is worth it at least. There is a chance he does it also. Good talent.

Fields will be ok I'm just disappointed that he's going to be our starting sf. I'd rather move DD, and get an AI type player and have fields take over the sg spot.

Regardless, Fields is not as bad as what LX is making him out to be.

Fields was a 4 year senior when he was drafted, he won't show us anything we haven't already seen from him.. terrible ball handler, makes bad decisions, inconsistent shooter, cannot create

Still plenty of off-season left. Things could change from between now until the end of October.

Oh yeah for sure I'd rather have Iggy, it's just that BC decided to go with Fields instead and ignored the 76ers on a deal for Iggy like he had a choice.
