Raptors Simmons on Raptors playoff chances

Quote:
Simmons: Working backward, I have Miami, Boston, New York and Atlanta as absolute locks. I think Chicago makes it because of their defense and because Tom Thibodeau is an absolute psychopath of a coach. (And I mean that in the most endearing way possible. That team only knows one speed: balls to the wall. I just can't see Thibs letting them become a lottery team.) The Sixers are the big hit-or-miss team for me if they can't get 55-60 games from Bynum, they won't get to .500 and we can cross them off. So that means we either have two or three spots available for the Nets (haven't knocked my socks off, but at least we know they'll score 100 every night), Raptors (mildly intriguing, seems like they have one more big Colangelo-needs-to-save-his-job/win-now trade looming with Calderon's expiring contract), Bucks (possible 43-win semi-sleeper if Jennings remains in Eff You for Not Giving Me an Extension mode) and Pacers. Logic says it's between Toronto, Milwaukee and Indiana for that eighth spot. So I have two predictions:

1. The Raptors could steal that spot with an ambitious trade like, say, "Calderon's expiring contract plus lottery pick Terrence Ross to Memphis for Rudy Gay." Remember, Oklahoma City gets their no. 1 pick if it falls between no. 4 and no. 14 this year (via Houston, thanks to the Lowry trade), so if anything, it's in Toronto's best interest to make the playoffs because they also get to keep their 2013 no. 1 pick. I see them overpaying for one more quality player in January/February if they're close to sneaking in.
Also, Lowe's take:

Quote:
Lowe: Meanwhile, the Knicks have looked great. The Nets can score. Philly is a mess, and their best player (Andrew Bynum) is hurt. The Raptors, assuming a quick comeback for Kyle Lowry, are dangerous and fun. The Bucks and Hawks are feisty. The Bulls are still defending like hell. That makes 10 solid Eastern Conference teams.

Simmons is right, we need a major upgrade at the 3 without giving up any of our other four starters.

I can't see Memphis wanting Calderon and Ross for Gay. If we are to get Rudy Gay we'll have to get a third team involved.

agreed, and we'd likely need to give more. Doubt Ed is enough either.

Looking at the contracts (yearly salaries) and depth chart,i think the only way to acquire Gay is through a 3 team or more deal. Colangelo has pulled this off before,he just has to be willing to gamble, which he's no stranger too.

The best and easiest way to acquire a bonafied talent or star is to offer a future 1st round pick or two in a package, that seems to be the new trend(Howard,D.Will,Harden, all pretty much acquired this way). However, the conditional pick(which OKC owns) keeps the Raptors stuck at a standstill until the selection is made

Gay on paper looks like a perfect fit I also like Chandler and he had interest in the Raps when returning from China. Brewer and Miller are considerable but too much of a project in my opinion, not sure what you're gonna get from those two in this system

We shouldnt be looking at the DEN SFs unless its Gallo. Brewer is a bench role player, and Chandler has a horrible contract he cant live up to, we already have one of those at SF. You dont want 20 million tied up at SF between Chandler, Fields, and Kleiza do you?

The guys we should be going after are Deng and Granger. Preferably Deng, who is a very good all around player and would bring the same compettitive edge Lowry has. Hes one of the best defensive SFs in the league, and is good at everything.

Granger would also be nice because hes a good player off of the ball and would give us good scoring on the wing, but hes average defensively.

A Bargs+whoever trade for Deng would make a lot of sense for both teams I think(once Boozer is amnestied in the offseason).

Wilson Chandler (only has 2 garanteed years left after this season):

(2012-13) 5.6Mil
(2013-14) 6.3Mil
(2014-15) 6.7Mil

2015-16 is a TO at 7.1Mil. This is far from a bad contract. I agree that we could do beter than another borderline starter at SF though. IMO this next 6-8 months there seems to be an oportunity to make a deal and i think it needs to be for a bonified SF. No more fucking around. I would also be willing to trade Bargs and have Ed, Amir at the PF position and eventually sign a vet big in the summer.

From what I rmb Chandler wanted to come to Toronto last season but at 9mil/year which Toronto did not want to offer him.

Also this past summer Raptors were after both Iguodala and Gay, Iguodala got traded in the Howard deal to Denver, and BC remained on trying to obtain Gay who really seems to fit our system. Someone who doesnt get much attention imo and Ive always really liked is Deng. Hes also a huge reason why the Bulls do so well along with Rose and I would love to have him here in Toronto. Would be great to have Batum but I believe he had an ordeal with us during draft time plus he's slowing coming into his own

The funny thing is i heard that someone said on the Fan590 this weekend that Rudy Gay to Toronto is still being discussed. I seriously doubt those talks are still going on at this point in the season but who knows.

Trading Chips: Jose, Ross, Ed and even Bargs. I'm sure using three of any of those players could net you SOMETHING good.

trading ross would be a mistake imo, unless it gets you a bonified star.

Well Gay is pretty close to it. He's star talent. That would be a definite winning trade. We all want Ross to turn into a player like Gay anyways??? And we want to win now, so have to get Rudy now. That's an easy deal.

I like W.Chandler but he's had negative win shares/48 minutes since joining the Nuggets.

If we want to trade Ross, we first need to ensure he gets more minutes and prove himself that he can compete in this league.

Based on my observation so far, his physical specs & skill sets are not yet competitive in NBA level. He dropped 10 points on OKC game, but that was during the whole garbage game where no one tries hard...

If Ross can prove himself to a scorer with 10+ PPG, then other teams will start showing interests on him. So far, he is no where close to a trade chip.
