Default SI slams Bargnani

from their recent power rankings - SI

Quote:
26 Last Week: 27
Toronto Raptors (20-50)
Soft is too kind a word for the indifference Andrea Bargnani displays as the man he is supposedly guarding glides past him for a layup. The most frequently used five-man lineups in Toronto pair the 7-foot Bargnani with a rugged power forward, usually Amir Johnson or Reggie Evans. But that isn't enough to prevent the Raptors from yielding the most points in the paint in the NBA. Toronto permits the most attempts and the most conversions of shots at the rim and it allows the highest percentage of conversions on shots from 3-9 feet. Bargnani doesn't exactly strive to prevent this -- his foul rate is the lowest of his career, and his negative impact on the Raptors' defensive efficiency is the highest on the team, according to Basketball Value. That he is under contract at a higher salary and a longer period of time than anyone on the roster bodes ill for Toronto's future.

This is exactly why he will never be an efficient player. Even if he scores 30 PPG, it is useless if he doesn't play defense.

note that the points in the paint by opponents is up 5.6 pts over last season.

as for defensive stats - it appears that the only positives with any kind of sample size are the Johnsons

always need to overstate huh?

He does get to the line much more, if I'm not mistaken. And he's taken about a half dozen charges at least. And in other areas he's plateaued more than regressed.

Rebounds- Down
Blocks- Down
Shooting- Down
Defense- reggressed imo

He gets to line more, but he has the ball in his hands a lot more then before also, but i'll give him that. Overall though, imo he has reggressed in pretty much every aspect of his game and he again remains inconsistent with his effort.

his defense hasn't regressed. Not that it could have gotten worse, but to say it's regressed is just wrong.

To be honest, there's nothing to regress on.

I think it has. At least to me it seems he altered a lot more shots last season and was a better one on one defender. This season he hasn't seemed to alter as many shots, contest shots which also accounts to a degree to the pretty large drop in his BPG (Half of what he averaged last season). He seems to care even less on D then last season, which i didn't think was possible. And his recent comments about "it's basketball not reboundball", seem to show an unwillingness to want to get better on defense.

Hmmm seems to me Bargs has played his best defense when there was something to play for...

Although he still takes plays off which I can not stand!

Why does he get away with the bad defense?

DeMars Defense hasn't been that great either...Maybe they have been told not to play any?

Maybe it's just the atmosphere of the team.

They're 30 games under .500, and little to play for.

Yea outside of Irving everyone looks like a bust to me. There needs to be serious scouting done by BC and staff in this years draft.

If we don't get Irving, we need to tank harder next year for a strong 2012 draft class.

On the topic of bargnani, he isn't going to improve his rebounding anytime soon. Its downright awful. But at the same time I don't blame him for our terrible defence. Its on the coach. If he is that bad on D, then why not bench him? Send the guy a message so the next time he gives his effort.

Bargnani may be a one dimensional player but this team is filled with one dimensional players. In a few years you guys will be bashing Demar for his one dimensional play. His defence is awful.

While his Defense is certainly not good, he's better then he was last season and he's only 21yrs old. Bargnani isn't improving on D, lacks effort and interest in doing so and is in his 5th season, going on 26yrs old.

tanking is not the right thing to do (EVER) I don't want the team to move.

Bargnani played a lot better when he trained with JO a couple of years back. I think management and coaching is the reason for his akward play the past couple seasons. Could you imagine him playing for Phil Jackson, I bet he'd figure out the proper way to utilize him.

there's been alot of games where alot of players have taken vacations on D.... you just like to harp on a few guys. As a team, this team is brutal defensively. Until they improve as a team, everyone looks bad.
