Default SI Roundtable: O'Neil/Marion Deal Benefits Raps More than Heat

Quote:
3. The Heat and Raptors have reportedly discussed a trade that would send Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks to Toronto for Jermaine O'Neal. Good deal for both teams?

Ian Thomsen: I thought O'Neal would be good for Toronto, so I don't have a lot of confidence in predicting his future. Miami could be using the threat of acquiring O'Neal to leverage another trade (for Brad Miller, as reported recently). Marion would energize the Raptors, who can't win without scoring in high numbers, but in the big picture it wouldn't be a big deal.

Jack McCallum: "Good deal for both teams" is a cop-out. It would absolutely be a better deal for Toronto. The athleticism of Marion -- who, by the way, in past weeks has been rumored to be going everywhere but Juneau, Alaska -- would help the hardworking Chris Bosh with rebounding and shot-blocking and give the Raptors the kind of unpredictable slasher they don't have in Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon. And I'm still waiting for O'Neal to become a truly elite player, not just someone who's supposed to be an elite player.

Chris Mannix: In the short term, sure, a healthy O'Neal can help Miami's smallish frontcourt, and Toronto GM Bryan Colangelo has been dying to get Marion in a Raptors uniform since he took over the team in 2006. And if Marion and O'Neal swapped teams, both Toronto and Miami would stand a good chance at making the playoffs. But let's face it, both players are stopgap measures. Marion will become an unrestricted free agent after the season and O'Neal has only one more year left on his contract.

Steve Aschburner: Better deal for Toronto, which would gain by both addition (Marion would be a better fit next to Bosh and Bargnani) and subtraction (erasing the bad O'Neal move). Miami would have to hope that O'Neal could rev himself up for a last hurrah, because he has been sounding like a guy who's borderline interested for a couple of years now. But Marion isn't enough of a factor with Dwyane Wade controlling the ball in a half-court game, so it's worth the try.

Since the consensus is that a straight-up JO for Marion trade benefits the Raps more than the Heat, it's understandable that Riley is looking to win the 'filler' portion of the trade asking/demanding Moon for Banks.

For the Raps, the prospect of being strapped with both Banks' and Kapono's overpaid contracts could be a deal breaker.

You know, i dont mind Banks for Moon. Banks is better than Solomon. And we do need a proper backup.

Bull. The only way that this ISN'T a good deal for the Heat is if JO goes down again for a significant amount of time.

JO can play a great halfcourt game with Wade. He gives MIA more size. He can mentor Beasley. AND he's still pretty darn good when he's on the floor. Then you have the huge contract coming off the books in 2010!! The blurb makes it sound like we're giving them Jake or something lol...

Marion will help but he's NOT a slasher. I don't know why they keep saying that.

That's a great point, 4Ever!!

If JO can play up to his potential for the next 3 weeks before the trade deadline, and if Triano can wise up and replace Moon for Graham in the starting line-up, we may have enough leverage to get Marion without Banks.

If JO plays as you describe he would, we should damn well keep him.
Introducing Marion into offensive and defensive sets only to lose him 3 months later.. pointless. We will have more playoff success with JO than with Marion. Theres always time to trade JO, his value only goes up. Unless he gets hurt... But Marion is hurt too

Oh and Graham started several games, nothing to write home about. He found his place coming from bench. Just like Bargs found his - starting as 5. Now if you asked for Kapono - his stats are much better when starting...
