SI: Raptors look promising

Quote:
According to reports, the Raptors are still open for business. What's the end game here? Are they building something that can last or is Bryan Colangelo just rolling the dice in hopes of saving his job this summer?
-- Fallon, Toronto

I like what they're building, Fallon. I know Colangelo has mentioned the possibility of moving Bargnani, but if they were to keep him and Lowry then consider this core:
C Jonas Valanciunas, 20 years old
F Bargnani 27, Amir Johnson, 25
F Rudy Gay 26, Landry Fields 24, Linas Kleiza, 28
G DeMar DeRozan 23, Terrence Ross, 22
G Kyle Lowry, 26
This could be a highly promising team as long as they stick with it. I understand the frustrations ownership and fans might experience with Colangelo, but do they really want to start over again with a new team president, who hires a new coach, who then wants to replace the players?

Quote:
This franchise should not let go of coach Dwane Casey. After a hard start he has this young team playing respectably with Bargnani sidelined. Casey emphasizes defense and he has been with a championship program in Dallas. Instead of starting anew yet again, the Raptors should maintain their investment in a coach who represents the right values for a young team with so much balance and promise across its roster.
Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets could buy at trade deadline - NBA - Ian Thomsen - SI.com

Quote:
Johnson hasnít been outstanding defensively, but heís so much better than every other Raptors big man that his shortcomings are completely tolerable by comparison. His most valuable attribute is his lateral speed, as heís capable of hedging and recovering in the pick-and-roll without too much trouble, but his shot-challenging leaves a little to be desired and he tends to arrive a bit late when rotating in help.

It's becoming a stronger argument to keep Colangelo than get rid of him...... and Amir's contract is one of the few of those mid-levels that actually is good value and not just decent or bad. BC for life homies!

I think BC will keep his job now, because the team is too locked for a new GM to make sense. You need to give the gay era at least one year to see if it goes anywhere.

My guess is they'll give him two more years, so by the time gay/fields/bargnani/kleiza are off the books, you bring in a new GM which has a relatively clean slate to work with.

the argument to keep colangelo is that it would be a bit of a drag to get a new GM. good work Colangelo, nicely done.

I like Casey, and i think he'll be our coach going into next year, but his leash will be a lot shorter no matter who our GM is. If next season there's a lot of questionable rotations/substitutions etc i dont see him lasting very long a la sam mitchell. this team will be in win now mode.

i see a never ending cycle. where more trades happen, especially with some of those expiring contracts and we'll be right back here. #ColangeloForever

Its funny how landing an all-star calibre player like Rudy Gay can change the future outcome of a franchise. Last night, Grizzlies lost at home to the worst team in the West with the worst road record.

Yeah. This sort of stuff doesn't anywhere near guarantee any success with Gay here, but it sure makes you feel better about the chances. And a heck of a lot better about losing Ed to take that chance.

Colangelo will and should be gone when we dont' make the playoffs this year. We don't really look all that promising but getting rid of Jose was a huge step in the right direction.

step in the right direction? he was our best pg this year. he was not hurting the team, in fact he helped the team more than anyone else on the roster this season. how is that a step in the right direction? i dont understand some Raptors fans.

Colangelo is going nowhere imo. Especially if he trades Bargs for a player that's under a long term contract (2-3yrs?). These moves and the way he's talking (ownership is willing to spend), he doesn't sound like a guy that thinks he's going anywhere. I have to agree with Eric Smith, management is happy with the direction of this team, the rebuild and if they're willing to spend then i have a feeling Colangelo will be re-signed to a 2-3yr extension.

All depends on how the team looks from now until end of season.

If DD and RG continue to look great, it'll definitely reflect positively on his future here. If he can pull off another big deal that nets us a good player, he'll stay 100%.

I agree with your point (that one game is only one game), but the Grizzlies beat the Suns in both prior meetings when Rudy Gay was in the lineup.

If Val and Ross are "promising" then a lot of rookies are. And by logic, that means their "promise" is less "promising" if everyone else is "promising".

I do like Gay and DD's alright, still mixed on Lowry.

I can't wait for Colangelo's next awful signing/trade in the offseason if he's around.

a core of lowry, ross, derozan, gay and val is very very promising imo
but i do absolutely not understand, why val and ross don't get any run now, the playoffs are as good as out of reach, so let's develop our young guys and don't give your rookies 6 min combined in a time like that
instead giving anderson and gray an ass full of minutes is just plainly stupid

The amazing thing about the Gay trade is we now have a SF that can be realistically matched up with any and every SF in the league and have the expectation that he won't be seriously overmatched.... even Lebron, Melo and Durant. It's a beautiful thing.
