Five of the basketball writers from CNN Sports Illustrated gave their 2 cents worth on the first month of the season and answer some questions. See below for the Raptors related ones.

The Raptors have Chris Bosh playing at his best, an All-Star-worthy point guard in Jose Calderon and (before suffering an ankle injury last week) a rim protector in former All-Star Jermaine O'Neal. It's a surprise to find them at .500 in the neighborhood of the remarkable Nets and Knicks along with the Bulls and Heat. It won't be a surprise when they find their rhythm and go on an extended run.

McCallum: Toronto. There are so many candidates, but I'm going with the .500 Raptors. Bosh is having a predictably monster season, but wasn't the addition of O'Neal and the maturation of Calderon supposed to turn the Raps into an Eastern contender? It hasn't. It's time for Andrea Bargnani to start playing like the No. 1 pick he was and for Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon to pick up their games. More from O'Neal when he returns would help, too.

Mannix: Toronto's O'Neal. I know he's hurt and that a lot of miles have been logged on those 30-year-old tires, but Toronto had to be expecting more from O'Neal than 12.4 points on 41.6 percent shooting. Bosh is playing like an MVP candidate, but if Toronto's playoff history is any indication, he can't do it alone. First and foremost, O'Neal needs to find a way to stay on the floor; when he's out there, he has to be the complementary star Toronto thought it was acquiring last summer.

i actually love the critiques.
fact is, they are BANG ON.
And i dont see them as 'hating', i see them as disappointment more than anything else. These guys are admitting that they expected a lot more from the Raps - as did we - but havent seen it yet.
They're saying how well Bosh is playing and how good we should be, yet we're not playing like contenders, And thats the truth. We're sitting on a .500 record.
With Bosh having an 'mvp' type season, and an all star PG in Jose, along with JO - we should be dominating.

well they're correct, Gurk. We are playing at a similar level to the Nets and Knicks.

If you asked me before the season if i thought we'd be getting similar results to those teams i would have laughed.

some things simply have to improve:
Calderon getting back to 100%,
JO contributing like before he went down,
better coaching,
better Jamario, Parker, etc.

we got lots of work to do.

I would put Nets ahead of us right now, they beat Denver and Utah.....

Devin Harris is exactky what they needed and now look at them. They are a good young team and once they get rid of Carter for some good young players they will probably even better

they're right.

we've got 3 all-stars and we have nothing to show for it.
every other team with 3 big names are contenders in the league.
celtics, lakers, portland, houston, denver...

what's so bang on about them, they're obviously coming from people who never watched us play. Bargnani is a very solid contributor right now, I don't think anybody expected him to play better than he does this season. And anybody that comments on JO and start by saying he "only brings 12 points of 41% shooting" is disregarding the huge impact he has on the boards and on defense. He's just a guy looking at the stats and saying "Wow, JO really sucks".

not to say that a team like Orlando playing with reddick and johnson in the backcourt is winning almost every game (they lost in Boston, but before that they won I don't know how many in a row). AP + Jose >>>> reddick + johnson, in every possible way. I guess good coaching can mask defensive deficiencies after all.

Yeah - i guess so Moremilk - some of their details and refferences are a bit sketchy.

Still this team is a big disappointment for me thus far. I expected more than .500 ball.

we definitely been a dissappointment ... i don't see why were stuck at .500 when we have Bosh J.O and caldy not to mention our more consistent bargnani. why are we still at .500? we should be cruising right now.

The Knicks have had an unbelievably soft schedule to start - probably given to them by the League head office in order to keep Knicks fans from mass suicide. The Nets have had a little tougher sked - but have lost to some really weak teams. So I can't compare the Raptors to those teams and be so disappointed.

These guys have some truth in what they say in that JO has taken some time to really show his form, and he needs to be able to stay on the floor a bit better. There were games where that has been a problem.

The idea that we have three all-stars is entirely wrong. We have one all-star, one former all-star, and hopefully two guys that might someday become all-stars. Talk about counting chickens with all this 3 all-star stuff.

I agree with everything they said except the Bargnani part. He's been playing terrific as of late, making their .500 record all the more disappointing.

we're dissapointing all right, but not for those reason they mention. And NJN might be a very good team this season, but I have a feeling that VC will fucked them, especially if harris keeps playing like this - he will not stand for being second hand in NJN.

This is such typical American bs; all they talked about all summer was how much better a team Philly would be with Brand. They also said it would be better than Toronto and now they say Raptors are the most disappointing team. Why not Philadelphia?
