Default SI.com: AN OPPOSING TEAM'S SCOUT ANALYZES THE RAPTORS

Quote:
The Raptors aren't so lousy anymore, but they'll have a hard time getting out of last place in the Atlantic because it's such a good division.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Jose Calderon, who has been an important part of their team. He's one of my favorite guys in terms of being a pure point guard and directing their team and making big shots, though he's not a good defender. He's somebody a lot of teams would like to have, but his big price tag [a $10.6 million salary] has put him out there in the last year of his contract. I don't expect we'll see Calderon get traded anytime soon. It seems like these situations happen closer to the deadline, unless a team has a real need for a point guard because somebody goes down.

One reason Calderon has never had firm control of the starting job in Toronto is because you always had the feeling that he's not a great defender, so you want another guy in there to help at that end. Over the last five years he's been one of the top guys in assists per game, and I know a lot of coaches think highly of him for his leadership. At this stage of his career he'd be an outstanding backup point guard.

Some people really like Kyle Lowry, though I haven't heard too many of his coaches say they really like him. He seems to have a high opinion of himself -- the word is he's very obstinate -- but he is tough and he's been productive. I can't really get a feel for him. Is he one of those guys who is a good player on a bad team when he gets a lot of shots and he can be in control of the game? It would be interesting to see what he can be on a good team [Lowry has been to the playoffs once in six seasons], though we're not going to be able to see it this year. He's in another one of those situations where he gets to play through his mistakes and selfishness while having a productive year numbers-wise.

Lowry is a strong point guard who embraces his role as the alpha dog. He can beat his man on the dribble, he has been known to make open threes, he can shoot behind the pick-and-roll when he gets it going and he's a good free-throw shooter. Lowry is a rhythm player who can score in bunches and finish plays in traffic. He's tough-minded. He will get into scraps, rebound and pressure the ball. You look at Lowry's numbers and you say, He's a really good player. But there has got to be something else there -- because it was a numbers guy, [Rockets general manager] Daryl Morey, who got rid of him.

It's also quite possible that Morey is a moron. So far Lin has looked like an horrific acquisition. If that continues to be the case then it sort of explains things. He's a numbers guy. That says quite a bit right there.

Letting go of both his PG's from last season doesn't exactly smack of intelligence. Both at times played all-star level basketball. Althoughj I read somewhere that ownership pushed to get Lin to try and capitalize again on the asian community like they did with Yao.

Morey can't blame ownership when he lamented letting Lin go the first time around. He should have looked at Lin's numbers a bit more closely perhaps, including the small sampling of games.

to be fair, lowry wasn't getting on great with mchale and dragic was looking like he was at least as good if not better. They wanted to go with dragic. I guess morey does need to look at why he couldn't get dragic to stay. I reckon lin will do well for them. Not as good as dragic or lowry tho.

I think we as raps fans should be slightly concerned about lowry's attitude but i'm not forseeing a huge problem. Change of scene for lowry, new chance, he won't want to mess it up. I was also looking at our team in pre-season and thinking who here will lowry butt heads with and i honestly don't think there's anyone. The players will allow lowry to be the alpha-dog. I think the chemistry could be great.

and if it came down to an issue with the coach i only see one winner there! So i'm not massively worried there either.

Hey, the team needed an Alpha Dog. Casey metioned it a couple times during the offseason. When the Alpha Dog is the best player on the team, it does help. Hoping the dawg stays healthy for any hope this team makes the playoffs.

Why is that? Alpha dog = individual that naturally takes control. The Raps didn't have one. Lowry (though maybe not as pure a pg as Dragic) is the strongest leader out of the Houston guards of Dragic, Lowry and now Lin.

Lin isn't going to shoot 22% during the regular season. His shot has been curiously bad thus far but he was fine last season and should bounce back.

His assist numbers and steal numbers continue to be very encouraging though... and THAT's probably what HOU is going to want from him. They have a decent amount of scorers there.

lin is coming off an injury and is not even close to 100%, he'll be good for them eventually.
but I still think they made a massive mistake in getting rid of lowry, there's no way lin is a better PG and he's making 30% more money.

um ... no, that's not why (hopefully).

they need him to be a scorer, because they have nobody else to score - martin is ok when he's not injured, which is never. If they got lin for his defense, they'll be very, very sorry ...

If you really want to get technical HOU brought him in for marketing purposes. Anything else beyond that is just our speculation.

HOU has some shooters who can put the ball in the basket. I think they'll be fine in that regard. I do agree though that it'll be more of a struggle if Martin goes down again.

Lin's D continues to disregarded... why that is I'll never know. People talk about him as if he's Jose or Steve Nash on that end when he's anything but. With his size, strength and quickness at the PG spot (and good mind for the game) I'd expect him to continue to rack up the steals this season (and have his share of blocks as well).

It was explicitly said that the Rocket's owner pushed to acquire Lin for marketing purposes.

I think he's going to have a shitty year without Melo and Amar'e to draw the D away from him.

My friend just got a puppy.....the pup was the last of a litter of 8. He asked the breeder why he was the last pup left...his answer was he was the Alpha of the litter. It just scared everyone anyway.
Lowry is the Alpha dog....no problem because one thing Jose can teach him is how to be a team guy and a professional both on and off the court. Jose will keep Lowry in line and in a way that will not embarrass him !
