Raptors SI.com: Offseason grades

Quote:
Few quality players were acquired this summer, leaving the Raptors without all that much hope for instant improvement. While replacing Colangelo and dealing Bargnani were great moves for the general health of the franchise, Toronto isn’t a recognizably better team than it was at the end of last season. A full year of Gay and more playing time for Valanciunas should help swing the Raptors into the playoff picture, but even that isn’t an offseason development so much as a natural evolution.

Otherwise, Toronto’s moves were mostly lateral at best. Hansbrough isn’t much of an upgrade, and will log minutes as a marginal reserve forward; Augustin might be a less useful NBA player at this stage than the departed Lucas III; Buycks, a 6-3 guard, looks to be a decent prospect but will likely be buried in the rotation; Richardson won’t last on this roster to the new year; and while Novak and Daye are OK additions, neither moves the needle much.

It’s good that Toronto is moving on from Colangelo’s tenure and Bargnani’s stint, but this is still a team in need of rebooting its reboot. Some of the present core pieces are worth keeping and investing in, but for the most part this base group doesn’t seem all that likely to secure a playoff berth this season and lacks the upward mobility to pose a more considerable challenge in future seasons.

Grade: B-. Ujiri is off to a fine start, but it’s tough to be more optimistic about the Raptors’ offseason because not even any decent long-term pieces were acquired

Grades aside I think TH was a solid move, I like how he plays. DJ is better than Lucas and shipping Bargs was a must. More moves will follow but we all need to see what we got after 20-25 games.

DJ is not better than Lucas. Lucas can actually score. Hansbrough wasn't bought in for his talent neither.

I don't mind DJ at all, Lucas is hard to watch when he runs the floor. TH was brought in because he is relentless and because we need some tougness. He is actually a good player and can do more than just that.

DJ Augustine is better in almost every aspect.

Career stats:

FG%: DJ>>>> Lucas

3PT%: DJ>>>>>Lucas

PPG: DJ>>>>> Lucas

APG: DJ>>>>> Lucas

Per 36: DJ>>>>> Lucas

Best season:

DJ: 14ppg/6apg (41/33/90)

Lucas: 7.5ppg/2apg (39/39/87)

Obviouly Augustine has played more minutes and has been a starter. But to say Lucas is better is pretty ridiculous. At worst it's a wash. Imo lucas is worse defensively

That's all very nice if he can return to his career best.

Last year:
DJ: 10.5pp36/5.0ap36 (35/35/84)
Lucas: 14.5pp36/4.6ap36 (39/38/72)

Sure, he's been better before, but there is no proof he'll be that good again. His most recent campaign suggests he is actually a downgrade from Lucas. And neither are great defensively.

Mehh, there is more success in Augustine's career than Lucas' career imo. I stand by what I said and that at worst it's a wash. And he doesn't have to return to his career best numbers either. If he can be somewhere in between last season and his number earlier in his career we'll be fine.

Big if. His role will be a lot closer to last year than any other year of his career.

That's fine. Still don't think he's a downgrade from Lucas......hell, I think buycks might be a better option than Lucas once he gets settled in the NBA.

I'm guessing as Roy Hibbert would say... Y'all motherfuckers don't watch us play. You haven't seen him in a Pacer uniform, have you? He couldn't play defense, couldn't facilitate the Pacer offense, couldn't score. The guy sucks.

I take a lot more into consideration than one season on a new team in a new system. Unlike many I don't only judge a player on one season, if said player has experience. Not saying he's some great player, but he's as good and imo likely better than Lucas.

essentially you'll take a has-been and point to his career totals to justify his effectiveness. nice.

Look at how he chucked his way to those numbers on a scrub team, and how he was terrible for an actual good team.

He chucked?

He averaged 8.9 shots per game in his 4 seasons in Charlotte, averaging 11ppg/5apg while shooting 40FG%, 37.5 3PT%.

Again, not saying he's a great player by any stretch. But he's certainly not a downgrade at all from JL3. He's a better passer, is a pretty good 3pt shooter and for his career he averages 1.5 TO's in 25mpg so he can take care of the ball.

Part of me would like to see Buycks as our primary backup eventually because I think he might be decent. But I have no problem with Augustine playing a backup role.

40% fg shooting is fricken terrible. I suppose you may believe he's better than JL3, but I don't think so. I believe Buycks will eventually become better than DJ.

DJ fell behind Ben Hansbrough in the PG depth chart, come on.

JL3 has a career 39FG%, and has shot worse from 3pt range as well. He has never shot 40 FG% +. Not once...

And imo as a PG JL3 is far more selfish than Augustine. Like I said at worst it's a wash....anyway this is ridiculous. We're arguing over which scrub is better. Can't wait for the season to start.

To add to this IF, if we trade KL, DJ most likely will be our starter for the remainder of the season.

well we're not talking about career FG%. Besides, DJ shot 35% last year which is god awful. I suppose you're right, it's pointless to argue which scrub is better, which is why I firmly believe we will suck this year .
