Default Should we trade a first round pick this year for an impact player?

So, our biggest needs are at PG/SF. This draft seems to be heavy at the PF/C positions (where I would say and others as well, we're solid).

That opens up possibilities of possibly trading this pick.

I look at two teams specifically.

Firstly, OKC COULD trade Westbrook for certain assets. If we had a top 5 pick, I wonder if we could grab him (it would all be dependent upon signing and I'm not sure if that's even capable right now). But a package of a high lottery pick + Jose for Westbrook + future first/exchange of firsts, I wonder if it would be enticing.

Secondly, I'd call Boston and see what it would take to grab Rondo. I would argue Boston would happily take that deal and run. They're aging and looking to rebuild. Their best asset is Rondo and if they were able to grab a guy like Anthony Davis, I think they would look long and hard at that trade. Plus, Rondo's defensive mentality would fit with this team's new mentality.

The nice thing about about both options is that they're still both relatively young. They're not 29 going on 30.

We're already a young team and we need veteran pieces. I think this could be the year where we may trade a high lottery pick for a necessary piece.

Only if we could also package davis and barbosa and get a mid first and get MKG

Its always possible, I would think if Colangelo sold a deal like this. You would have to think he would pull the trigger considering both those guys are still young. If hes not, pull out the pitchforks.

Westbrook / Rondo types - absolutely. Even in a good draft, a high pick is just an outside shot at an all star. unless it's one of the top ones.
so if you can get an all star, and not just any all star, but one of the elite ones, and young as well --- i don't think there's a question.
you also add 2014 pick if you have to, demar, davis, all the 2nd round picks you can find, etc.
well, in Rondo's case you might want to check his elbows and ankles first.

The only reason I bring this up, is that I think the opportunity is there for us to do something like this.

Make a 'big move' like this and then make a play for Batum and all of a sudden we could go from bad to 'up and coming' pretty quickly.

It's one reason I'd like to see more picks come this way.

They may need to start by trading an impact player of sorts to get an extra pick coming back. And then things could either open up, or some loud picks gt added and something can be done with stockpiled assets from there.

I agree. Adding Rondo/Westbrook & Batum (and JV) would make us a real threat next year IMO. Although I have my doubts about Westbrook, if you can get him for a pick and Jose/Davis/Kleiza/whoever you take it and run.

if we get a top 3-4 pick i'd rather keep the pick and trade Derozan or Davis or even Bargnani (if we can get Drummond), to get an impact player. Maybe add in a future pick. But i'd rather keep our pick this summer then trade it. Now if we're picking say 7-10th then maybe you consider trading it.

If Bargs is traded (if we can get Drummond) we go forward with Derozan, Drummond, Valanciunas, Amir, Davis, impact SF from Bargs trade and then get a PG + depth with our capspace.

Anyone get the feeling that one of Davis, Derozan, Bargs, Amir, Jose will be dealt this summer?

If there is an opportunity for a young star, take it.

I'd think we'd have to add to get Westbrook with that package..... but it really depends on what Ed Davis does this year. People last year were saying he's better than Greg Monroe..... not sure about that but if he can consistently contribute who knows. A lot of teams will be hesitant to give up too much for an inconsistent young PF and a lottery pick that really can't be defined yet

None of us can predict the future so I will acknowledge up front this is just my opinion.

I don't think the Raps stand a chance in hell of getting Westbrook.
Two reasons:
1- OKC management loves him. Woj has mentioned this more than once in his artcles. It will take a great package or an amazing player to pry him away.
2- Westbrook is exciting enough that several teams will want him. OKC will get multiple offers and at least one will be better than what Toronto could offer. If forced to, I could think of a couple of hypothetical offers other teams could make.

As for Rondo, that makes more sense to me. I can see that happen, since Boston could be rebuilding soon. And, as has been reported, Boston has already tried to deal him when they were still looking to contend. Ainge is willing to shop him.
In my opinion, it would depend on what Boston does with Pierce. Does he retire as a Celtic? Pierce still has some game. If Pierce stays, then Boston is not really rebuilding so much as they are "reloading". Once Allen and KG expire this summer, Boston could use their cap space to add a couple of good pieces next to Pierce and Rondo and they would be back into the top 4 in the East. If Pierce gets traded, though, I could see Rondo being traded for a package the Raps could offer.

I don't see Rondo as a top 3 or 4 PG like some here do, but he has a respectable contract and is still a solid PG. I would be happy to have him, especially if the pick is outside the top 3.

trade our first pick away now, and win 15 straight games so we get a 3rd seat in the eastern, and whoever got our pick ends up getting a 20th pic in the first round rather than what they expected 1-5 pick

Tell you right now, if we could somehow get Josh Smith here i'd give up Bargnani + our pick for starters to do it. Smith/Valanciunas front court combo would be sick shit. Then you amnesty Jose and spend most of our 20Mil capspace on a SF & PG (Chandler or Batum at SF??). Felton, Nash (2yr/15Mil?), Sessions,Hinrich, or ?? at PG.

Nash?
Derozan
Batum
J. Smith
Valanciunas

I wanna see Nash here, + 1 on you bud! that looks like a good lineup, including that J Smith is like a Lebron type of player, (Nowhere near but still)

I'd go as far as to give the pick, ED, and another asset for Rondo. Anybody on this team but DD and JV.
