Default Should the Raps take a flyer on Thabeet?

Grizz willing to deal Thabeet

Wednesday marks the official start of the trade season, with players who signed free agent deals last summers eligible as of Dec. 15 to be traded. Some GMs around the league believe that Milwaukee, which made substantial commitments this offseason to the likes of Drew Gooden (five years, $32 million) and John Salmons (five years, $39 million), may look to shed some salaries, but GM John Hammond insisted last week that the Bucks just needed to get healthy.

Right now, teams are making their due diligence calls, but no signficant offers. But one mame that is eminently available is Memphis's Hasheem Thabeet, who isn't one of the '10 free agent signees but is getting shopped hard by the Grizzlies, who have their center of the future in Marc Gasol. So the Grizz are looking to cut bait with the second pick in the '09 Draft, who's already had an NBA D-League stint, as soon as possible.

What about sending Weems and filler for Thabeet? Why not take a flyer on a guy that could be a legit backup C with good size?

I suggested last week that we get Thabeet as well as Mayo and someone said to me "why would they give up on him already". lol

lol... of course. He's likely not going to be a stud, but he could be a legit C off the bench with a good defensive foundation. Guy isn't a health issue, and seems like motivation is his key concern. I'd think he's exactly what Toronto should be looking to take a chance on.

Rumours of him being traded have been around since he was picked, so clearly he is moveable....

if this is all they saw out of him, why would they draft him 2nd?

There's gotta be more to it. He'd be good with some pt.

They definitely saw more out of him, but haven't gotten more out of him. Bigs are known to take time, maybe it just hasn't sunk in for him. If we could get him for one our average SG and filler, why not?

We've already got our own version of Thabeet in Alabi.

Doesn't look like management is content with tanking to acquire a top pick, and there's no history of landing big name free agents. So perhaps this is the way to build the team. Keep acquiring low risk/productive reward prospects that have yet to flourish in their current situation, and who could possibly benefit from a mere change of scenery and more burn. I call this method BUST BALL!

2. sunny is not the future of raps
3. we are short of C's

The reality of it is, Defensive bigs are hard to find, and Thabeet has shown the potential and has the pedigree to be one. It's a flyer, and we havea dearth of average wings.... it's a potential steal, or it's a low risk move that doesn't pan out.

It's not about who we send, but rather the idea of if you think he fits with what could be for this team.

That was me. And you probably know it.

Memphis is stupid for trying to ditch him this early. It is a total buyers situation. They must be extremely desperate to shed salary.

If that's the new plan, then we should have begged Riley to give us Beasley instead of sending him to Minnesota.

I think OJ is the much more interesting option for us. Just like sonny, he has a good relationship with Demar and that would be a positive. OJ is also much more talented and would be a very nice challenge for demar on a daily basis. I see those two potentially developing well together.
