SF Going Forward

I feel like small forward is by far our biggest hole, and there are a lot of different paths this team could take. This summer is a great opportunity for us to solidify the SF position for the future.

I've heard everything - Gallo, Chandler, Batum, top 5 draft pick, whatever. Although I'd be happy with any of the above, my preference would be to make something happen with Nicolas Batum and draft the BPA this summer regardless of position. I see Batum as a rotwhiler on a leash...he's just waiting for an opportunity to explode onto the scene in the right situation. He'd address defense and knock-down three point shooting, two huge concerns for this team. Given the opportunity I think he's a 16/5/3 guy.

My question is what do you want to see happen with the small forward position now and in the long-term? What do you think will happen?

The draft. Players like Harrison Barnes and Lamb would be available in the draft for us. Even Kidd-Gilchrist would looks very good in a Raptor Uniform.

It's likely one of those three will be good players in the NBA.... such a crapshoot to depend on.

cloudnine 01-16-2012 10:53 AM

Barnes looks NBA-average at best. He's not particularly athletic (really hard to compensate for at such a crucial position), not a super shooter, and doesn't have an NBA-ready body.

thought 01-16-2012 10:56 AM

Yep. Barnes has disappointed me this year. I was expecting a big jump from him this year, particularly his playmaking and getting to the basket. I haven't seen much improvement in anything but the jumper and even that is underwhelming at times.

Sounds like you're describing a yet-to-be-drafted James Harden.

thought 01-16-2012 11:11 AM

harden was a playmaker coming out of college. barnes' vision blacks everything out except for the basket.

you may be right, I haven't seen any tape of him.... But I remember Harden looking ordinary during the draft.

thought 01-16-2012 11:16 AM

i thought harden would be a bust. didn't think he was athletic enough to get his game off, and wasn't sure if he had next level skills to compensate. he has improved a ton.

i just don't see the well-roundededness from barnes.

powerfulpanda 01-16-2012 11:39 AM

barnes has marvin williams written all over

JDMtors 01-16-2012 11:39 AM

Well as for SF I think staying back an extra year will definitely help Barnes out with his development. I havent watched much NCAA the past 2 years really so I cant really comment on how well he is this year other than just read on reports.

But somethings I do really think is a better choice is to:
1. Trade Davis + Barbosa + future 1st for Rudy Gay/Andre Iguodala/Nicolas Batum/Marvin Williams (more developed SFs would benefit more imo)
2. Considering we are late lotto I say we pick up BPA or a PG
the traditional PG + a Big is always crucial in winning championships but I think Calderon can hold his ground for 1 more year as a starter or maybe even Bayless

He has more talent and more desire than Williams, but they are similar. Another comparison would be Beasley.

I would rather have Kidd-Gilchrist at this point with his all-around game.

As for improving the SF spot, unless the team could get a player like Batum for cheap, I would rather use the draft to improve the SF position. There are several SF prospects eligible for this year's draft.

Get Omri Casspi for pennies on the dollar this offseason. Then draft one.

What do you think will happen?

I'd take those questions seperately, since what I'd like to happen probably won't happen.

Here is my video game plan that probably wouldn't work:

Step 1:

Trade Barbosa to Lakers (they have a TPE) at the trade deadline for the Mavs 2012 1st round pick

Step 2:
Bayless (S&T) + Ed Davis to Memphis for O.J. Mayo (S&T)

Step 3:

Use cap space for lopsided trade during this offseason:

Demar + 2013 1st rounder for Iguodala

Iggy has a jumpshot now. He's willing to share the rock and he plays defense. I know some people think he lacks leadership, but the upside to his game is worth giving Casey a chance to handle him.

Step 4:

Sign George Hill to an offer sheet and steal him from the Pacers. He's not really sexy, but he plays defense and can hit a shot. And, if B.C. overpays a little, he might just be able to steal him. Maybe send the Pacers the 2012 Mavs pick in order to get them to let Hill go. Hill might work really well next to a playmaking SF like Iggy.

Step 5:

Draft BPA with 2012 pick (this summer)

To accomplish this plan, it might be necessary to amnesty someone. Not necessarily Jose; maybe Kleiza. Depends if there is any other filler sent to Philly.

2012-2013 video game Raptors

Hill
Mayo
Iggy
Bargs
Jonas/Amir

*and 2012 pick to go where needed

As for what I think will happen, maybe we get a good pick in 2012 and then we strike out pretty bad in the FA market. I'm not that hopeful.

2 step 3's. your plan has been voided...

You typed as I was making several edits.

My plan = respectable team

That's why it won't happen!

I was disappointed with the effort you put into the "think" half of your response. clearly not the same level of commitment.

box92 01-16-2012 04:38 PM

get batum, draft lamb, have demar playing the 2 and 3 spot with weems. Trade barbosa for a pick before dead line, draft kobongo, take Andrew Nicholson in the second round, just because hes from my high school lol.

jose/bayless/kobongo
lamb/demar/weems
batum/JJ/klieza/weems
bargs/Ed davis/Andrew
Amir/Val/Bargs

Then next season throw money at Steph Curry, trade Ed, bayless, LK and a future first for DeAndre Jordan

2013-2014 line up

Steph curry/Jose/Kobongo
Lamb/Demar/Weems
Batum/JJ/Weems
Bargs/Amir/Andrew
Val/DeAndre Jordan

Win Championship LOL

I'm not feeling those three guys at PG, I just think one of them would get upset with their PT and Curry's health is an issue but everybody else is good.
