Default Secondary Effects of Johnson Addition

Quote:
In Johnson, the Raptors get another tough big man to pair with Reggie Evans and Rasho Nesterovic as the substitution platoon. Despite not living up to his potential (allegedly) in Detroit, Johnson is still just 22 years old and has fairly large upside as a shot blocker and post defender. Im a big fan, personally, and his toughness is a welcome addition. Hes also stronger offensively than Evans, providing a little more versatility in the rotation.

At the same time, as Raps Fan outlines, DeMar DeRozan is thrust into a bigger role. Essentially, losing Delfino (our supposed backup-SF) for another big pushes Antoine Wright into more SF minutes, leaving more minutes open at SG for DeRozan (or possibly, minutes for DeRozan at SF).

And finally, the Raptors acquired more team-specific upside than they gave up.

So I guess those were my not-so-quick thoughts on the deal. I like it, I love Johnson, and this is another Colangelo special.

He's an upgrade from POB, highly doubt Raptors were going to make Delfino sign here even without the trade but hey, more minutes for Demar.

Did I read somewhere that Delfino expressed a desire to play elsewhere?

I think that's what Colangelo said...I read that somewhere too.

Quote:
“After drafting DeMar DeRozan and trading for Marco Belinelli, Hedo Turkoglu and Antoine Wright, Carlos made it clear he would prefer to play elsewhere if he were to return to the NBA,” said Raptors President and General Manager, Bryan Colangelo. “There were limited sign and trade scenarios available, but acquiring Amir Johnson in this deal gives us another long, talented young big man whose best basketball is ahead of him.”

I think Delfino just wants to be a big part of a team, he doesn't care about winning. He really loves the game of basketball.

I don't see how this means a bigger role for the rookie. There is still Beli and Jack that can take minutes. Delfino was just going to cause clutter in the rotation.

In the case our season doesn't go along as planned and Bosh wants a trade, Johnson is their to fill in that role. We don't have to worry about a PF coming back in a trade we have a full team and BC will look for the best possible trade for Bosh.
He is just an insurance policy, that's (I think) the reason why we heard about interest (from the Raptors) in CV and David Lee at the start of the off-season

wow, please restrain to making insane assumptions. Johnson is not here to replace Bosh and will be lucky to see much time even if Bosh left. probably will be the most inconsistent player on the squad this year and tease fans all season long.

Actually on many nights i think he may see more minutes then Evans and be the primary PF behind Bosh coming off the bench. I'm guess he'll be up & down though, unless he starts to come into his own.

Depends what Johnson we get. If get one who's improved in consistent the minutes are surely there. If not then I'm banking on him being a huge tease.

I hope he doesn't pull a Hoffa and do well once every ten games. That was just cruel.

Something tells me he can be a solid interior defender though, something we desperately need.

lol, I think that's the least of our concerns now. We got a pretty good post rotation.

@duca not sure why you keep pushing the inconsistency theme, where you have nothing to back up your theory. Amir was the black sheep because he had a small contract, and detroit had to play brown and maxiell who were fresh on their new fat contracts from dumars at around 5 a piece (maxiell has a ton of years). And of course, compared to mcdyess and wallace, amir is not even close. So really, he was a victim of bad circumstance.

just because you don't like him (for reasons that completely escape me), you don't have to spread FUD about him.

Moremilk, I have giving valuable facts that Johnson is inconsistent. I want Johnson to succeed. If we get the Johnson that he's capable of playing he will be a monster. Point is though, he has proven for 4 season to be inconsistent, and for people not to accept he has been inconsistent in the pas escapes me.

Thing is Amir was only 18 when he started playing in the NBA. Can't blame him for being inconsistent then. Also normally bigger guys take longer to adapt to the NBA game. So he should really be given the 'benefit of the doubt'.
