Raptors Scouting report on Rudy Gay pre-draft

Saw this posted at RealGm and thought it was pretty funny.

Quote:
NBA Comparison: Scottie PippenStrengths: Elite run/jump athlete who finishes well above the rim ... High flyer ... Very versatile... Does everything well ... Complete offensive arsenal... Can hit the mid range jumper... Excellent at slashing to the hoop... Accurate passer who is very unselfish... Does the majority of his damage in the post ... Very tough to defend... Doesnt get pushed around down low ... Runs the floor well ... Tough on the boards... Works harder than everyone else on the court ... Will most likely play on the wing at the next level ... Extremely long (7-3 wingspan) and freakishly athletic ... Has shows tremendous potential. Late to the game, so his lack of a great feel could improve over time, he wasn't seriously coached until he was a junior in high school ...

Weaknesses: Though he's just 19 years of age, his sophomore year was supposed to be his to take over college basketball. When that didn't happen, people began to question his desire and intensity and whether he has it in him to become great ... He floats in and out of games, and tended to defer to teammates in clutch situations ... Is it a lack of fire, or just a lack of maturity and confidence? Time will tell ... Unselfish to a fault, like Vince Carter, he almost takes being the perfect teammate too far. He's a star and should act like one ... He still struggles to create offense for himself off the dribble, getting the majority of his baskets off of rebounds, or passes from teammates ...

What do execs or scouts tell you most about your time at UCONN?

Rudy Gay: They say sometimes I was a little passive, too unselfish and stuff like that. Looking back at tapes I do kind of see myself doing that, but thatís what Iím working out for.

I remember reading up on rudy gay when he was a draft prospect.
A lot of mocks had him #1 overall before the NCAA season started comparing him to scottie pippen
Kinda scary that wiggins is drawing up similar comparisons now with double the hype

He was the consensus number 1 at the start of the year then dropped like a stone.

Kind of like Drummond. A year before the draft he was seen as the likely #1 pick, then dropped to #2-#3. He ended up going Ninth and Gay went 8th in his draft class.

I recall that quite vividly. He turned out to be a whole lot better than the guy who went #1. Regardless of the souring of his time here, he's still probably the 2nd best player out of that draft next to Aldridge.

Brandon Roy was better until he got hurt, as was Rondo.

Just checked out the class...

Roy was better, but he's done. Rondo over Rudy too. But still 3rd/4th best out of that class.

It seems that Rudy took those "be more selfish" suggestions to heart, haha.

I really think Casey is at fault. He isn't "Holding anyone accountable" or anything else for that matter.

He was a shitty chucker last year in memphis too, don't blame Casey for that.

Not really. He took the same shots he always took, around 16 per game. He only started getting called a "chucker" when the shots went in less regularly. He has always been a high volume shooter because that's what was always asked of him and it's partly why he got a max deal.

On the turnover prone side, and doesn’t make his teammates better. Brings little to nothing to the table as a passer, and needs to improve his ability to find the open man when he draws additional defenders.
...
Not a great defender considering his tools, but has his moments when he’s motivated. Has all the physical tools of a lockdown defender, but lacks the right mentality to get the job done.
Sounds like he hasn't changed much since 2009.

You don't think he impacts games in other wats?

On the positive side, we can't doubt Rudy's work ethic. He did an awesome job getting rid of all that unselfishness.

They failed to mention that his 7’3" wingspan allows him to dribble the ball 3 feet away from his body.
