Default Scouting report on Amir, october 2008

via ESPN Insider

Quote:
2007-08 season: Remind me again why this guy didn't play more? Johnson shot 55.8 percent, had the second-best rate of blocks in basketball, ranked in the top third of centers in rebound rate, and lost his minutes in the postseason to Theo Ratliff. Really.

Sure, he's a bit raw. Johnson was mistake-prone, with 10 offensive fouls and six illegal defense violations in just 769 minutes, and he wasn't always in the right spots on D. But he was also devastatingly effective, ranking 14th among centers in PER. There is absolutely nothing in his track record to suggest this was a fluke either -- his numbers from his previous two D-League seasons and his scraps of NBA time have all been outstanding.

Scouting report: Johnson is listed at 6-9 because that was his height when he turned pro out of high school, but he now appears to be 6-11 or even seven feet. He has a thin frame and still needs to add muscle, and he has no perimeter game to speak of -- last year he was 5-for-26 on shots outside the immediate basket area.

However, he's a freak of an athlete. Johnson has made at least one crowd-wowing play every time I've seen him perform, whether it be a flying swat or a soaring follow dunk, and despite his slender frame he's a superb rebounder. Right now his biggest issue is his propensity for turnovers, but otherwise he appears to be one of the game's top big man prospects, a Marcus Camby in the making.

2008-09 outlook: Johnson unquestionably needs to play more, but it's hard to see how he'll crack a rotation that includes Antonio McDyess, Rasheed Wallace, Jason Maxiell, and Kwame Brown. OK, scratch that last part, but the first three guys will be difficult to displace. Somehow, the Pistons need to get this kid (he's still only 21) at least 20 minutes a night to let him develop, because game experience is probably his biggest need and he's shown he can run with the big boys.

Most similar at age: Andris Biedrins
we've traded roko freakin' ukic to get "one of the game's top big man prospects, a Marcus Camby in the making" and some people are unhappy???

I agree it was a pretty nice deal but this report is old. The bucks have let him go for a reason. Anyway, there was no room for Ukic and Carlos in the Raptors, Amir covers a hole in the rotation, he has great upside (even if he wont probably reach it) and he is much better than Pops. Good move.

he definetly looks taller than 6'9

Also, Im happy for Roko and Delfino. Theyll probably get the playing time they deserve in the Bucks.

it's nine months old, espn does a season preview for the top 300 players or something like that before every season starts.

the bucks let him go because they are morons, they will let go sessions too, after they've gave away RJ earlier this summer. This trade could be a bigger steal than belinelli.

His first point in Nba was a dunk against Timbers....This guy loves dunking...I hope he doesnt turn into Moon..Moon had abilities but never used them...this guy has the ability to be great and has to use his height and his aggressiveness to get his bread and butter...he is will backing up Chris Bosh or Andrea...and he can run the court...

The reason was Ukic is talented young PG and they really need a guy like Delfino. Great trade for both clubs.

Great trade - BC continues to impress. And at the same time shows a bit of class by finding Roko a place to play.

Love it.

If he turns into Moon without taking all the bonehead threes that Jamario use to take, i'd be happy. Johnson should have more potential though because he's about 6 years younger and a hell of a alot tougher.

Wasn't he a part of the Pistons kiddie corp in 07 that forced other teames to overplay their starters?
For a while that year he played more than Maxiell and was starting when McDyess was out. I think he will be a keeper.

Um. When he was with Detroit, I remember watching a game against toronto where I hated them so much becauase he, Maxiel and Stucky were all playing hard aS NAILS AND making the soft Raptors look even worse.

And now he's on Toronto.

I am happy.

And I didn't much like Roko, he was a guard that couldn't hit shots, thats no good.
