Default The Score: Summer League Report Cards - DeMar DeRozan

Good read

While the Toronto Raptors had 12 guys on their Summer League roster last week in Vegas, only four players are guaranteed to be with the Raptors when training camp opens. DeMar DeRozan stood with Patrick O'Bryant, Roko Ukic and Quincy Douby as the four with the most to prove. Although a lot of fans tend to dismiss Summer League, a lot can be gleaned from the performances, stats, highlights and efforts.

All eyes were on DeRozan through the five games the Raptors played in Vegas, and he certainly didn't disappoint. The rookie averaged 17 points per game, but even more impressive than the points, was the versatility he displayed in getting them.

With a handful of dunks to show off his athleticism, some lay ups on the break to show his basketball headiness, and a few beautiful moves where he spun free from defenders and took his time to create space to get a shot off, DeRozan was adept at getting to the rack in a wide variety of ways. Regarded as "raw" by many in the draft, DeRozan displayed an excellent mid-range game and was able to use screens, prompting a "tweet" from Mike Moreau (on ESPN's David Thorpe's Twitter Feed) that "[DeRozan] really comes off the curl with speed, balance and elevation - very controlled. Will come off a decade's worth of pin-downs."

When looking to score, his combination of athleticism, instincts, and skills gave the Raptors coaching staff plenty to smile about in the stands.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of DeRozan's performance in Vegas were things that he didn't do. He didn't get caught up trying to score when going against some of the bigger names. While most of the other rookies were jacking up a few too many three-pointers, DeRozan understood his offensive limitations at this stage of his career, attempting just five shots from beyond the arc. He played solid defence, showing glimpses into the type of perimeter defender he can be, getting low and using his quickness to stay in front of his man. Most importantly, he showed a patience that belies his age. While Score Tonight will have plenty of highlights DeRozan is sure to produce, he did the "little things" on the floor, knowing where to be at all times and impacting the game even when he wasn't putting himself on the Top 10.

For all of his basketball prowess, it may well be off the hardwood where DeRozan truly shines. While many fans are talking about DeRozan as a player in terms of his "potential" and "raw athleticism," DeRozan has a media savvy at 19 that some players never manage to grasp. While in Vegas, DeRozan was interviewed by David Adridge and Kyle Montgomery for NBATV, as well as Kevin Arnovitz for ESPN. His face was regularly seen on Summer League coverage that went continent-wide -- far beyond the Toronto market -- but DeRozan took it all in stride, continuing to express his excitement in playing for Toronto.

Of the four players mentioned above - and the other eight rounding out the Summer-League squad - there is one locked in a three-year contract. One with the hype and job security that should make for some easy breathing. Of the four, only DeRozan arrived to the gym before everyone else each day, staff included. And it was only DeRozan, who would be available long after the game had ended when everyone else had departed to the hotel.

This is the rookie outworking eight others, who are literally fighting for their NBA lives, and another three who have something to prove to the coaching staff. This is because he's got something much bigger he's been fighting for, and because the game has become his release and has remained his greatest love.

While making it to the NBA provides instant access for his mother Diane - who suffers from Lupus - to the best medical care money can buy, he knows he hasn't truly accomplished anything yet. Seeing this attitude on display from a pre-draft workout in early June, through the dramas of draft day and again all week in Vegas, DeRozan is setting the tone for an exciting rookie year and promising career.

It's just a prediction, Believe what you believe, it's just what I believe...

It doesn't mean it will happen.

Demar is the perfect draft pick at number 9. He definitely deserves the A grade.

With Jose Calderon, Jarret Jack and Alvin Williams supporting him? Talk about walking the great path for learning and development.

In Demar I see Iguodala, but with a better mid range game, more patience, and an overall higher basketball IQ.

D2 has all the same tools as VC did but the difference is, I believe he is going to use them to the fullest of his abilities!

The Vince comparisons are unfair, Vince wasn't just the most talented athlete in the league, he was a straight up freak. Vince was also older and more well-seasoned coming into the league, throwing such hefty expectations on a young guy like Derozan is pretty heavy.
