Default [sbnation] SL Rookies ranking - Ross/Acy mentions

Damian Lillard, Then Everyone Else: Ranking The 52 Rookies At Summer League - SBNation.com

Quote:
20. Terrence Ross, Raptors

If the Raptors see Ross as more of a "3/D" guy that camps out on the perimeter to space the floor and plays strong one-on-one defense, then they should be encouraged by his play in Vegas. You could see him playing with DeMar DeRozan or Landry Fields, occupying a complimentary role while making an impact for his team.

I just feel like the No. 8 pick should have shown a bit more than that. He had major issues getting into the paint off the dribble, forcing him to fire up a bunch of errant jumpers. For the Raptors to get him a scoring opportunity, they had to hope a defender helped off him or that he could free himself using the maze of screens set up for him. His defense was impressive, and he'll be used next season, but I was frankly disappointed in his inability to get to the hoop.
Quote:
41. Quincy Acy, Raptors: Was seemingly desperate to prove he could hit a perimeter shot, and actually wasn't that bad at it in the limited time he played.

Anyone who uses summer league to determine how good a player is going to be doesnt pay attention.

If summer league was any indication of how good a player was going to be then Anthony Randolph and Jerryd Bayless would be top players at their positions.

Yea I really don't get how you can judge a players career off one summer league.

Mehhh, pretty much. I wasn't all that impressed with what I saw from Ross in summer league. Curious to see what he does when the season starts.

Exactly what I said a few days ago... with Fields it looks like we could have used a scorer off the bench, and Lamb could have been nice.

the limitations are real though, but well known
We don't need him to create, he has to score and defend, at least initially

I actually think Ross is going to do fairly well this year. He is young, and can be developed. His defense is good, and he can shoot the ball. Raptors are in need of a decent SG which can be used as Fields and Ross, with DeRozan being pushed to SF where he is better suited in my opinion.

No one is saying their careers will look like this and that... It doesn't hurt anyone if somebody ranks rookies based on their performances in Summer League.

Summer league might not show the real potential. But completely ignoring it is even more stupid.

One thing about Ross is that this kid can dunk with style.

I expect another dunk contest entry from Raptors - yes, that would be Terrence Ross.

I think his maximum upside could be as high as T-mac.

His maximum is a cross between Sonny Weems and Jamal Crawford.

I actually liked what I saw from him in 2-3 games I've watched. He passed the ball, he created for himself off the dribble with a step-back and generally handled the ball quite well, he played pretty good D...

One of the commentators has likened him to a young Eddie Jones. I wouldn't mind that comparison coming true at all.

Well.. the good thing is he is a rookie, teams are not going to focus much on him, he doesn't really need to create much off the dribble, just use him how the raps used DD during his first year.. I think his role will be a little bigger though, but just run some screens for him so he can hit down the open jumper

are we all excited because Ross got mentioned on a rookie ranking. lets hope our 8th pick because much greater than that.

still think it wasn't the best choice, and the likes of lamb will eventually have better stats and overall careers..agree with jeffb, we'll see when the season starts...
