Sam Mitchell

Ok I'm new around here (even though I've been creeping for months) and I wanted to get a read on everyone's thoughts on Smitch.

I hate him.

Not as a person, but as a coach (his interviews are hilarious). There is a lot of talk around here about "oh will JO be the missing piece" "bargs has to get better" blah blah blah. None of this matters with Smitch on the bench. This team isn't going ANYWHERE as long as he is head coach, no matter who is on our roster.

I'm not going to pretend to be an expert or say I could do a better job than him, but I think he has to go and should have been fired after the Orlando series.

He doesn't know who to start, makes bad subs, doesn't take time outs to slow the game down when he should (the opposition is on a 10 point run and you HAD a 15 point lead - it's time to call a TO), seems to have no set offensive plays beyond pick and rolls and no defensive plays whatsoever. He isn't helping Bargs development either (this alone should be grounds for dismissal when you are stifling the development of a no. 1 pick). Kapono is also a waste under Mitchell's system.

I'm not saying he is the sole reason for all Raptor problems but he isn't helping at all. His coaching ability is at a (U.S.) high school level.

What do you all think? Why is BC keeping him on?

I personally never liked mitchel, the fact that BC but togerther a good team in 07-08 was the only reason SM got coach of the year. SM needs to actually start putting some effort into his coaching. Dam the only thing i see him doing is taking his fat Paycheck and buying some pimp suits so he looks good loosing. They didnt fire him beucase they jsut extended his contract and fireing him would have cost a nice chunk of change. IF we do shit this year, he is gone imo.

...The season must be getting close. Sam will be here this season for its entirety for sure. This is because he has far to much money remaining on his contract for Colangelo to eat it. After this season would be the first reasonable opportunity for them to get rid of him. At that point I think it will come down to whether or not there is a realistic long term option available on the market. They're not going to fire Sam and eat the rest of his contract for the sake of getting rid of him and then still have troubles with the coaching situation. Basically, I think that Sam won't be fired this season and if he's fired after that time it won't be a lateral move; it will be to hire a high profile coach. If one isn't available then you'll be making another one of these threads next pre-season.

this is going to be one of those threads that really really pisses me off.

sam is a fine coach who will continue to improve each season. most importantly, he has the respect of the players and gets them to listen. x's and o's will come, but i'm sure a better coaching staff beside him would seize those limitations.

oh

and a better team too

that would help. you seriously can't hold him responsible for losing to the better team. if anything, that's our gm's fault.

You don't think being payed millions he should already have generic tactical knowledge?

here's what i think

mitchell is one of the better coaches in the league

and

there aren't any available or many currently employed with teams in the league that would do a better job with the cast of players he's been handed.

I believe that BC's hand was forced when Sam won the Coach of the year. He wasn't really "his" guy, but what do you do? Not sign the reigning coach of the year. I think if they don't make it out of the first round then he has to go.

I want Sam to to be successful but it won't happen until he goes to another situation. The Orlando series he was out coached and his rotation is horrible. I don't know if the players excute his plays properly or what, but what I as a fan can see is that his line-ups and his player rotations don't make sense to me.

I wish him luck... but i think the firewood is under his ass!

The thing with sam is that he doesn't know when to put in what player like last year in the playoffs he put Bargs in the starting line up for 2 game when in the first game he already showed he couldn't be there. Also, if Smitch can't get the raps past the first round he is out of here

RIGHT gurkang! you have to show confidence in your team and their ability. You make adjustments during the game but you went with Moon for most of the year so you should have stayed with him. I can't recall any other team this year in the playoffs adjusting their starting 5 for the playoffs. Although we probably still would have lost but you never no. Confidence and momentum go along way.

Blather.

Anyone can list off any number of generalities about any coach. Take the tbag list and put it up against what the great Phil Jackson did in the Finals and Phil doesn't exactly look lightyears ahead.

The bottom line for me is that the guy has turned this franchise around, he actually is BC's guy, he is improving from year to year, and if you put all the cliched criticisms up against what actually happens from game to game, they all crumble under their own weight.

Sam will have to prove something with JO in the mix. But anyone want to hazard a guess at one of the main reasons JO is so enthused, focused, and happy to be playing on this team? Sam knows Reggie. JO knows Reggie. Don't think for a second that Reggie didn't help both player and coach understand what they could be getting. JO wanted Smitch in Indiana last season. I think it worked out much better for us that he stayed here and JO left Indiana.

Mitchell struggled. Colangelo arrived and brought in an entire new roster. Mitchell made the playoffs. Who turned the team around? I don't see how Mitchell can share in any more than half of the credit.

I like Sam Mitchell.Does he always make the right decisions,NO.But i like his attitude with the players, they really like playing for him and want to win for him. He's still green but has improved immensly since his first season and i think he has a long career ahead of him in the NBA as a head coach if he chooses to not go in a different direction. If the Raptors stay healthy this season and they under achieve,Sam will most likely be fired though next summer. That's just a feeling i have.

I love his banter with the media too.LOL

First of all it was the 06-07 season (coach of the year).Secondly BC put a good team together, but Sam Mitchell had to deal with a whole new roster with 9 new players and turn them into a cohesive unit and did an unbelieveable job doing so.If anybody thinks it's easy to have 9 new players buy into a system and win 47 games, win a division title and help change the perception of the Raptors within the league they're crazy.

Did he do it alone. Not by any stretch, but he was a huge reason why that team came together the way it did.

Brian Colangelo won coach of the yaer, not the Smitch.

He really should be canned and probably will by 2010.

But if the Raps make the second round of the playoffs then I don't think he will be fired even though everyone wants him to be

really? i think sam is more responsible for winning BC executive of the year than BC is to sam winning coach of the year. Our team is just starting to build an identity, and that all falls on o'neal's arrival.
