Question The Salami & Cheese: Will Bosh Sign an Extension?

As every NBA fan knows, July 1st, 2010, will be the start of a very interesting off-season. Several superstars, including Amare Stoudamire, Yao Ming, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James will be able to shop the market, and free to sign with other teams.

Because of this, every Raptor fan has that one big question on their mind—will Chris Bosh stay in Toronto?

Considering the fantastic off-season Bryan Colangelo and the Raptors’ front office have had, Bosh may be inclined to stay in Toronto. According to Bosh’s Twitter page, he seems very excited to work with Hedo Turkoglu, Devean George, and Antoine Wright next season. The Raptors also have much money to spend, so Chris will more than likely be welcoming other teammates to Toronto. Add the drafting of DeMar DeRozan, the Toronto Raptors could have a very bright future.

On the contrary, however, Bosh may still leave. Considering the Raptors play in Canada, the team plays somewhat under the radar, unlike other teams. Compared to the US, the market isn’t as well known in Canada.

Since Bosh is an all-star, he may feel like playing in the US is a better option to increase his popularity.

In a recent interview with Fan 590’s Eric Smith, Bryan Colangelo said he will offer Bosh an extension sometime this summer. Bosh has made it public he would like a max deal, so I’m guessing the Raptors will offer him around $17-19M per year.

NBA experts have predicted the salary cap in the 2010-2011 NBA season will be around $50-54M. That is a huge decrease from this upcoming season, as the salary cap for the 2009-2010 season is $57.4M. If these predictions are true, not only will these athletes take a potential big pay cut, but it will limit how many superstars go to a certain team. Given this, Bosh may feel inclined to sign an extension. With the economy only getting worse, Bosh may be getting the most “bang for the buck” if he signs now, rather than waiting a year.

I don’t know where I stand on this—part of me says he’ll be a free agent next July, and another part wants me to believe he’ll sign an extension this summer. My gut feeling is saying he won’t sign an extension. That doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t leave Toronto, however—he may become a free agent next summer, to then sign a new contract with the Raptors.

Either way though, Colangelo is hoping Bosh will stay in Toronto—and it’s showing by this great off-season he’s putting together. The Raptors now have a very solid starting 5, and it appears a better bench will be added.

Chris Bosh will have to make some tough decisions in the near future. Hopefully, he will stay in Toronto for years to come, and the future will continue to be brighter for the team.

Answer my poll question. Will Bosh sign an extension? I want to see where other Raptor fans stand on this issue.

Didn't he say he wouldn't sign an extension this summer on ESPN?

Either way, I think the Raptors are in a good position. If he stays we have Chris Bosh (hopefully not for the max), if he leaves it will probably be in a S&T wich will bring some nice players to the team.

This garbage I keep hearing about Bosh playing in Canada and flying under the radar is bull shit. Does the guy get missed come the allstar game selections...not. Does the guy get missed when it comes to selection time for Team USA......not. Do the fans in the NBA know not know who is Chris Bosh and team he plays on........not.

If anything Bosh has more fans in the game that know him by playing in Canada and with our European support group. No way Bosh is flying under the radar.

i think with the cap going down, next years free agent signing feast will not be as explosive as first thought, especially as the team has the right to offer so much more! Bosh will sign soon, he was making those statements BEFORE the cap level was dropped... should be interesting to watch what LBJ and Wade do as well as CB do with this new information

Actually he just said on ESPN yesterday while they interviewed him about his twitter battle that he doesn't care about the cap going down and he doesn't really worry about it.

hey gurk, watch out, acie is catching you, he's only 200 posts short

as far as bosh, I'm sure that once his agent explains to him what the cap going down will mean in financial terms, he will not be so quick to dismiss it.

Bosh said that he is going to just think about the cap going up. I agree with milk about the agent's role there. Positive thinking might not be the best approach.

Honestly... Bosh would be a fool not to sign here now.

BC has done what he promised and pulled together a very good team to surround him. We can offer him the most money and he's the unquestioned star of the city and the team.

Where is he going to go to get paid AND be in a better position to win?

It's not like he's going to go to some contender for the MLE or something....

I am less worried about the Bosh situation. Worst case scenario right now is that he bolts, leaving the Raptors empty handed and they would then take their cap space and throw it at a guy like former Brian Colangelo draftee Amare Stoudamire and hope for the best...Yes, Bosh is better but Amare would fit well in what's going on right now in Toronto. They could go on without skipping a beat if they could get him.

They need to win games.

I agree. Some of those things could have been argued in his first couple seasons, such as getting snubbed in the rookie/soph game for MVP...Losing out to Melo who damn well didn't come close to out playing Bosh that night, but for the most part he's getting his recognition. He was even getting honorable league MVP mention a few years back by various media people.

I don't like the idea of overpaying him, anyway. Now we have a really good team even if he leaves, and by a sing and trade or using the space his salary will leave under the cap we can land a player good enough.
I shall say to BC to wait the end of the next season before offering him a huge contract. Because if Bargs keeps improving like the last season, Hedo plays at the same level of last playoffs and DeMar turns out being a really good surprise we don't need a max contract player.
Hope Bargs or Hedo (or both) will do the all-star game, so noone will keep saying that we're losing the only all-star calibre player (As if this indicates something then).

I'm pretty sure Bosh would have until the end of October to sign an extension. Waiting until next summer is going to create a whole lot of unrest late in the season if the Raptors don't play as well as anticipated.
