Default Rumors: Pau Gasol, Greg Monroe Targets After Lowry is signed?

The Toronto Raptors emerged as one of the top young teams in the NBA during the 2013-14 season. Nearly making it to Round 2 of the playoffs only secured that idea. Free agency and the draft will be crucial for the team to return in 2014 and truly be contenders in the Eastern Conference. With Kyle Lowry's return the priority for the team, who could also come in?

An elite big man could be one of the key pieces the Raptors need to target in 2014. How about Pau Gasol? The forward/center is looking to sign to a winning team and if the Raptors re-sign Lowry, they will fit that description. Gasol is aging, but when given the moment to shine, he excels. Last year as the Lakers lone option, he stepped up with 17. 4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. He is elite insider the paint, opening up the Raptors offense even more with his distributing skills.

There is no way this team signs/wants either of them. No way.

Why not? I for one would love Monroe here, and have been hoping we'd make a move for him for some time now.

I have no idea if we could get Monroe, but he would be a massive upgrade to our PF position. I love Amir and PP, but Monroe seems like a decent guy that would fit in. Not sure about his defensive skills though ...

Pau would add veteran presence that our team lacks ... not sure how he fits in our long-term plans ... would need to of-load Amir and others to make room

I wouldn't either of these guys, jonas valanciunas game reminds me of Pau Gasol, and he could definitely benefit from the presence of pau on the raptors

What if we sign pau to really big money somehow for short period in a way that it doesn't affect our wish to splurge one summer for a max FA? I don't know how we would do that though with the cap.. Dan, any ideas?

Only VC makes sense. Pau and Monroe would cause spacing issues for us, and cause HUGE defensive issues.

I just think this season is mostly going to be about Ross and Jonas getting stronger. They definitely need to try to find another Salmons-type player, unless Landry somehow uses his inner Lionel Ritchie to rediscover his shooting form.

If they can tweak the lineup with a move that brings in a player they have always wanted to acquire and it makes perfect sense, then cool. But i don't see where they just start looking to acquire players simply because they are available.

it's all about money, monroe is probably going to cost a lot, but gasol may come cheap.
I don't consider gasol to be all that weak defensively, and offensively he can play farther from the rim than amir or monroe, so I'm not sure why would he cause spacing issues. Plus, he's a very smart passer and would make JV shine I think. He's a pretty good post player too, so he could give JV some pointers there.

I worry that relying on player development and minor tweaks might be a naive move on our part

We all know the competition this year in the east was subpar to say the least. Many east teams will improve via trade or draft. Can this team with its current roster/chemistry be enough to compete withstanding any changes to other teams. Im not confident enough to say yes. There were many times this season, as successful as it was, that the team was way to dull and lack lustre. We could point to coaching, but we can't omit the make up of the team being responsible for it.

I personally want that one next piece to be acquired this season, star or not, that brings what this team needs.

Neither will come cheap, and both will be even more expensive if you want to offer a short term deal. Neither are an option for the Raps unless Lowry bolts and we let PP or GV walk.

How much would it take to sign Thabo Sefolosha?

I think he'd come for 5 or 6 mill, he's done in OKC, but I'd prefer if he'd be in a sign & trade for Novak to maintain some cap flexibility.

I'd be happy with this....

Lowry- Vasquez- De Colo
Derozan- Sefolosha- Fields
Ross- Carter- Fields
Amir- Patterson- TH
Joval- Okafor- Hayes

Not sure what it would take to get those 3 players, if we re-sign KL/GV/PP.....and if we'd have the room. VC could be signed probably for the vet min, Sefolosha maybe for the MLE. Now, it might not be those exact players but something like that would be ideal.
