RICE: So you're looking to close a free agent deal before matching an offer for Nicolas?

BUCHANAN: Exactly, because you can spend all, let's say we have $15 million in cap room, you can spend all of that cap room, then go over the cap, not into the tax but over the cap, to re-sign Nicolas because you have Bird rights on Nicolas, so you can go over the cap to re-sign Nicolas.

Let's say we were to extend Nicolas early, back in January. Whatever we would have signed him at would have eaten up into our cap room. Let's say, hypothetically, you have $15 million in room, say you sing him for $10 million. So you have $5 million in cap room this summer to spend. Because we didn't get a deal done with him, he has what is called a cap hold, which is $5.4 million in room that is getting eat up on your books. So now you have this amount of room to spend on free agents and you can go over, on top of that, and re-sign Nic because you have his Bird rights.

BARRETT: The team has said they're going to match any offer for Nic. Nic has said he expects the team to match. Does that keep other teams from making offers because they don't want to have their free-agent money tied up?

BUCHANAN: It is a risk. On our end, we went through that with Paul Millsap a couple of years ago where your money, there's only so many free agents out there and you whittle down to the ones that you really want and target. If you're going to commit to a guy who's a restricted guy, you're tying up your money, like you said, it used to be seven, now it's three days. In that three-day window other guys may be coming off the block and now you're left, after the third day, if the team does match, now you're like, now let's go back, who's still in the pool? Now that guy is picked off that maybe you liked. it's a risk on their end. It was a risk on our end to kind of let him go to restricted, but we felt like the opportunity to add free agent or free agents on top of keeping Nic.
Quote:
RICE: What about point guard?

BUCHANAN: Ideally, I think that's our No. 1 thing we have to address this offseason is finding a long term starting point guard. This free agent group is fairly strong, there might be some trade opportunities out there, but that's No. 1 for us with this team, trying to find a long term starting solution at point guard. Being able to find that and retain Nic was appealing to us. We might be able to find a starting point guard and a starting center and then match on an offer from Nic or just extend Nic ourselves with our own offer. We felt like that was more important to us than getting Nic done then maybe having the room to sign one, a center for a point guard. We wanted to kind of have our cake and eat it to, I guess you could say.

the only way to get batum is to overpay, so the question is how much more you want to overpay, if his market price is 8, you would have to go at least 9, more likely 10 in order to make it less likely for them to match

I think they would match even 10 to be honest.

Sounds like our window is there if we want it. I'm not familiar with Mike Rice, can anyone speak to his credibility?

they almost certainly match 10mil. but i would offer that and take my chances.

5yrs/50mil

i wonder if a sign and trade is a possibility. Especially since they want a veteran PG.

Then make them. Take them out of the PG market.

That's the problem - if we make an offer to Batum and they match, we'd lose 3 days, likely a bit more and some of our other targets might get away.

Portland GM sounds like they'd go after unrestricted guy(s) and hope to have deal(s) in place before the 3 days are up and they have to deal with Batum's offer. Smart strategy for them, sucks for the teams competing with them for his services.

On the other hand, until draft time all this speculation doesn't make much sense.

Just going to throw this out there again. 4 years is the maximum length you can offer, unless the player is your own Bird free agent.

Calderon for Batum would be interesting, depending on what other moves are made.

Right. Here - sign Deron Williams @ max (wave AJ), trade Calderon for Batum, draft Marshall - done.

If we could get Flynn and Batum then sign Dragic we'd be pretty good.

Dragic/Flynn
DD/Forbes
Batum/JJ
Bargnani/Davis or Amir
Joval/Gray

Batum is a player the Blazers want to keep and rightly so. They already stated they would match other offers so why is this even a serious discussion? We could make an attempt and at least it will only be a 3 day wait but isn't this futility?

Not necessarily. Maybe the offer is too rich and they'd rather make a S&T..who knows? It's worth a shot. It's up to BC in the next two months to see if he can gauge if it's even a possibility. As he said last week he'll have a lot of lines in the water.....Dragic, Ilyasova, Batum, AK47, Lowry?...and i'm sure we'll hear about 4-5 more names in the next 6-8 weeks. I think BC needs to look at every possibility and if there's even a chance of him getting Batum he has to seriously try.

Just a quick perusing of the Blazers forums, but they all seem willing to match at least up to $11 mil. It's also nice to see they're just as delusional as we are in going after Deron/Nash/Dragic etc.

So long as there is no "C" preceding the team name - sure, great idea. :cookie:

i think Batum is the best RFA SF this summer, so many teams will compete to sign him a max contract. and we are not the team with the deepest pockets this summer.

but a sign and trade is possible, depend on what else portland would need.

NOH get tpe + 1st toronto 2013 (top 14 protected)
Portland get Calderon + ariza
toronto get Batum (11M) + E williams

NOh get a pick and some money for ariza.
Portlan get a starting pg, a starter sf, and keep money to go after a Center.

We get our big SF and still have money to go after a FA PG.

FA/Marshall
DD/Williams/Forbes
Batum/JJ/Kleiza
Bargs/Davis/Amir
Gray/JV

please rescue Batum, somebody, anybody. He deserves to play for a proffesional team. Not a bunch of candy ass losers who's owner cares more about the Seahawks, and runs my team like they're the Mariners. It's not OK to stink for 2-3 years then cheaply build a 1st round n' out contender. It totally breaks the Blazers tradition of being competitive every season.

Just from you point of view as a Blazers fan, what's the highest you would match for him?
