Raptors Rumor: Raptors considering a back-loaded contract for Lin?

I'm not buying this one....

I'd rather stick with Jose then waste money on Lin. Get a 2 & 3, then go after a PG next summer.

Quote:
The Toronto Raptors have interest in Jeremy Lin if Steve Nash rejects their overtures. The only way a team would be able to snatch Lin from the Knicks would be a heavily back-loaded offer. Due to salary cap restrictions, the Knicks can match any offer for Lin and the deals can't start for more than the $5 million mid-level exception. However, the final years of the deal could go well over $10 million if a team decides to go that route.

Quote:
Toronto will be in direct competition with the Knicks for Steve Nash. But Nash is expected to look to sign with a bona fide contender, and the Knicks and Raptors don't fit that description. The Raptors are also a potential landing spot for Jeremy Lin. They like him and what he'd do for their attendance, but Toronto would have to "back-load" an offer to the restricted free agent, paying him gazillions in the final couple of years of a deal, and hope that the Knicks would not match. According to league sources, that's what the Raptors just might do if their Nash plan falls through. But considering that the Knicks have no other viable options at point guard, and Lin has been nothing short of a marketing dream, they're seen as a lock to match any offer.

So our promised point guard of the future turns out to be two options that are mostly about marketing? I hope not.

The second paragraph is actually from NYdailynews.com

That linked site just quoted the other story. I was going to completely dismiss this as total garbage when I saw the name of the site on the link. I still don't think it's likely, but if it's from an actual reporter, maybe there is a small grain of truth...a small grain.

I mean it's risky to spend a bunch of cash on Lin after he's coming off an injury and you haven't had the chance to see him play in a game since then.

let alone the fact that he's only had a good 6 week run. his success is limited to say the least. can you imagine years 3-5 of a deal like that if he doesn't pan out. yikes, that would be ugly!

NY daily news is easy enough to dismiss, but yeah, a little more respectable than your Internet trash.

I disagree - NY Daily News is a Pulitzer Prize-winning publication and is actually pretty respectable, even if it does runs some trashy stories on their site to increase traffic. Still, a rumor is only a rumor.

I'd like Lin on this team, he's a smart player and has value other than marketability. It's the terms of the deal that would determine whether it's a good pickup or not.

Their coverage of the NBA leans heavily towards rumors and anything that falls within a ny-centric universe. And there is plenty of trash on the newsprint, not just on the internet.

I'd like Lin on this team if the contract was reasonable. But I wouldn't want to risk too much salary on him.

i wouldn't mind lin here if he left his overwhelming religious values at home, but i find giving him anything close to mle-type money is a huge leap of faith.

i just hope BC concentrates on the houston guards first and foremost

Wouldnt it be nice if we made some ridiculous offer for Lin and then NY matched and would be locked in cap trouble for the next 5 years. That would be one less division rival that would have a chance of being top level team.

I agree, I could live with having Lin as a starting pg on this team ,but knowing that NYC is going to match, it would be stupid to overpay. We have other positions that we need to fill in and have to manage our budget.

Why would an up-and-coming player want to come to TOR? When's the last time a good FA signed with the Raptors?
