Default rudy gay raptors player of the week

Raptor of the Week: Feb.4-10 | Raptors Watch

Quote:
Rudy has been big ever since he arrived and has scored at least 20 points in every game he’s been a Raptor; a big step up from the 17ppg he averaged as a Grizzly. He has brought about an air of change to this team who needed something new. With him comes playoff experience, leadership and not to mention his fantastic shot creation ability.

In fact, he made full use of that against the Pacers as he drilled a game winning shot to lift the Raptors to a solid win. That’s one of the big things Colangelo saw in Gay and why he went so hard after him. The kid makes big shots.

It’s just as Mr. Kyle Lowry says, “Big shot taker, big shot maker”.

Over the three games this week, Rudy averaged 22.6ppg, 8.3rpg, 3apg, 3.6spg and 1bpg. He also managed to work his way to the free throw line 18 times and shot 94.4%. Rudy averaged 41.6 minutes per game but did shoot just 36.7% from the field overall.

I thought i'd post this for his numbers in his appearances as a raptor so far. man's a machine

The title of the thread is misleading. I thoughT he was getting NBA wide recognition, then I clicked the link to find out he's "Raptor of the week" in an article by some random internet guy.

I agree. I mentioned something like this in the last game thread (vs. Hornets).

Although I love that Rudy has brought some more "swagger" to this team and seems to have given us a legit "all-star talent" I'll be concerned if he keeps chucking the ball at his current rate.

22 FGAs/gm is too many. That's what Melo's taking in NYK and it's what Kobe what taking before he started passing. The low FG percentage is also concerning. 40% is not good... not good at all.

I'd like to see him cut his 3PAs down to 1 or 2 per game and improve his efficiency and his assist totals.

The guy's good... very good... and I love what he brings defensively... just don't want to see him become yet another "volume shooter" who can only drop 30 if he takes 28 shots.

Misleading title. Thought he was named player of the week by the league.

It got the Sixers to the Finals in 2001... :cookie:

But seriously Gay will be fine, it's like what, his 5th game with the Raps? Don't worry.

Rudy gay shooting a low percentage is still more entertaining than anyone on our team in a long time

When you have a guy who could be considered a "chucker" just based on raw shooting numbers, the biggest worry is that he's freezing other guys out and/or taking low percentage shots. I've been pretty happy with Rudy's shot selection - he takes good shots that are within the flow of the offense. In that sense I don't really think it's a huge cause for concern. Would it help if he were shooting a better percentage? Yeah, but the fact he does take good shots makes me confident he'll work himself into a groove.

I honestly hope we keep winning and both DD/Gay shooting sub 40%. The PER/TS junkies can all rage and have aneurysms over it and we won't have to deal with them anymore.

His fg% so far with the Raps is consistent with what was going on in Memphis. His long range shooting is poor this year, especially from 3. The last four games, he's 2/18. So, yeah, as TORap said, it would be nice if he could cut back on the 3s.

That might be easier said than done, though. If you never shoot from distance, then the teams are just going to increasingly collapse on us and narrow the driving lanes, and send doubles at Rudy or Demar if they try to work in the post.

This is part of the reason why, right after the trade was announced, I thought this move almost certainly ensured that Bargnani was staying a Raptor. I didn't think they would go longterm with two starting wings who are both below average 3-point shooters for their careers. Not saying that will happen. It's just that, in theory, it makes sense to have a floor spreading PF playing with Rudy and Demar. Bargnani has used up so much of his goodwill here, that in reality he will be gone before we see how helpful he is to them over a significant sample. I'd love to have Ryan Anderson playing alongside Demar and Rudy. Anderson still rebounds while stretching the floor.

Even with the defense sagging, it would still be a good idea to a) only take threes from the corners (a much higher percentage shot league wide) and b) drive to the rim, even with the sag, with an eye to pass as the defense collapses.

The common suggestion to step in a couple steps is actually a terrible one for Rudy - he shoots an eFG% of 46.5% from 3 (poor, but ok) for the year, and an eFG% of 35.0% (horriawful) from 16-23 feet. Either he has to start making those shots, or he's got to just get a lot closer to the rim (even at 10-15 feet he is closer to 45% eFG%, and at 3-9 feet it drops to 37% again). The rim is where he needs to be.
