Raptors Rudy Gay brings work ethic, morals to the Raptors

Quote:
The influences of family are stamped all over Rudy Gay, from his work ethic to his personality to his feelings of responsibility to those around him.

He is just 26 years old but his values seem from an era past. He speaks and thinks and acts like someone far older and more experienced.

ďI like to say Iím old-fashioned,Ē the newest Raptor said during a wide-ranging interview in an Indianapolis hotel lobby last week.

ďI take pride in morals and doing things that men should do. I think thereís not a lot of men who do that, especially in our business. Thereís a lot of prima donnas out there. I think you have to be willing and able to get your hands dirty, take care of your responsibilities at your job, in your life.Ē

Gay has grown to become the man he is thanks to strong family influences that kept him grounded and balanced and responsible.

He grew up with three older sisters and his mother after his parents split. When his mother had to work extensively to support the family, a young Gay spent time with his grandparents and his grandfather instilled in him a manís sense of duty that has not been forgotten.

ďMy grandfather worked for 30 years and people that he worked with donít remember a day he took off, not for being sick or anything,Ē said Gay. ďBeing around that and watching him and my dad do stuff, and when my parents broke up, my mom had to go out and do certain things, my grandfather taught me.

ďHe worked in the steel mill, Bethlehem Steel in Maryland.

He told me a story. When he went to work, sometimes heíd have to wear two pairs of clothes so the heat wouldnít burn him. That was pretty rough, a whole different era and Iím not trying to go out and do that. But he taught me.Ē

On the court, Gay brings a presence the Raptors franchise has lacked for years ó a young veteran who knows the travails of building a team from the ground up, someone who has taken and made big shots and wonít shy away from the responsibility that goes with it.

Itís not that any of his teammates wonít take those shots but Gay has taken more, won more games for his team and brings a strength of personality a young team needs.

He was quite ordinary for three quarters of Fridayís dramatic victory over the Indiana Pacers but he was tough and good when it mattered, getting a key steal that set up the tying basket at the fourth-quarter buzzer and hitting the game-winner at the end of overtime.

Quote:
ďI wouldnít say Iím the man. . . but I just say with this team, I have to be more of a veteran, more a guy who has to go out there and do things to make people follow you. Itís a young and impressionable team and I donít think theyíve had that.Ē

Gay also realizes that he is not invincible, having heard the whispers about being a supremely talented underachiever. NBA scouts will tell you he has a propensity to coast through games or parts of them. Gay has heard the critiques and wants to use a new start to prove them wrong.

ďThere is so much talent on this team and but they donít understand it, they donít know it,Ē he said. ďI think I can relate because people looked at me like that at some point. Some people still think of me like that but I think itís going to take a lot, everybody on the same page.

ďIíve heard that (chatter about unfulfilled potential). . . . Iíve heard a lot of things but for the most part, my whole career, Iíve had times when Iíve had to go score but Iíve also had times where Iíve had to play a role to make a team better and Iíve been successful at that.Ē

Brings morals? So our guys were devoid of morals prior to his arrival?

Where does it say that? All they're saying is that's one of the things he brings.

Lol don't take me too seriously, it was a subtle joke. The author seems to be implying that our players lack morals because Rudy's addition fills that void. Not to mention what morals actually have to do with the game of basketball. Work ethic on the other hand is another story.

i dont know if it makes a difference but one thing i like about rudy gay is he is always talking to his teammates, picking them up, when jonas got hurt he was one of the first guys to check on him

i believe that was lacking on this team, guys were more worried about there shots and time on the court then watchign out for each other

i think rudy changes that

not sure i agree there. I think our team was already totally stacked with high character guys. Not sure we have any guys who care about their stats and mins. Maybe andrea but i don't think even him really. He took a lot of shots because he was first option and we desperately needed his scoring.

We needed a guy who would come in and be prepared to take big shots, not more team guys. I don't like it when gay shoots too much but he's definitely option 1 and that guy who can take big shots.

all our guys run over to pick each other up. Amir? Gray? Anderson? Derozan? Fields? Ed when he was here. Even lowry.

i do agree gay coming in adds to that, but it was definitely here already imo.

Rudy Gay and Demar are taking the majority of shots and shooting a lower percentage, but each player is making an effort to go to the rim and getting hacked and fouled and getting no calls. The Indy game was a badly officiated. But if both players shoot a low percentage, but still make the consistent effort to get to the rim, the calls will eventually come our way.

Rudy seems like a decent guy ... at least he isn't a head case ...

I'm more worried about Lowry ... hard to get a read on that guy

agreed, its not that he is a headcase and causes problems in the locker room, but on the court sometimes he seems out of it, like if the game goes south on the team he kind of loses interest quickly

It was just a dumb headline. Rudy talked about morals being important to him as a person. He didn't say he was going to bring morals to the team.

Agreed, it was laying it on a little thick on the autors part imo. lol

When it comes to the team he speaks about work ethic and help lead this young team which should have been the focus in the title.

If we had drafted Rudy instead of Bargs we'd have an entire team of puritans by now. Damn you, Colangelo. Could have been the Toronto Raptures.

Lol I know, it's all in good humor. Rudy is a high character guy, the NBA needs more people with his kind of attitude.

Rudy's a fantastic player and seems like an intelligent guy. Perfect combination really. This is the best trade I've ever seen from BC, I still can't believe what we managed to get him for.

he is a good piece i think on the BC plan. and he is a guy whom seems straight in his life, that is a good stability you bring in the roster.

and yes, getting him for caldy and ED is a very good trade. and when i heard people complaining about his contract, i affraid some don't understand how we must get big talent here. we need draft of course, but we need very good player to make our picks count for something.

Should have hired Marc Jackson as a coach, then.
