Rudy gay bans stat sheets in the lockeroom

Raptors focus on team unity, not stats | Raptors | Sports | Toronto Sun

Quote:

It’s common practice that after every game each player is provided a scoresheet. The sheet breaks down the individual players’ contributions as well as team totals.

That won’t be happening anymore in Toronto. Rudy Gay has put a stop to it.

Gay sees the scoresheets as an unnecessary barrier to team unity or even a temptation to be more focussed on what is best for the individual as opposed to what is best for the team.

“We’re not playing for stats,” Gay said.

Gay said there was no incident or no moment that pushed him toward this decision but as a leader on this team, he felt it was just something that was best for the team.

“I wanted to just nip it in the butt before it became an issue,” he said. “We come in here after losses, after wins and people are staring at those stat sheets, but that’s not what we’re about. We’re a team and the stat that matters is the W.”

When it’s pointed out that isn’t always the case in a league where the gap between the highest paid the lowest paid members on a team can be huge and stats may mean more to some than others, Gay agreed.

“It isn’t,” he said, “but at the end of the day if we win everybody gets their just due. I’ve seen it. I’ve been a part of it.”

Gay said there were no objections from his teammates when he delivered the news.

“No, none. It was pretty easy.”

Ironically, the numbers these days are looking more promising than they have in some time for most of the Raptors. Gay, who came down with the flu Thursday and woke up Friday out of breath, all achy and tired from a restless night skipped shootaround in order to be at his best for the game that night. His numbers weren’t all that great but, like his teammates, delivered when he was needed most.

As it turned out, Gay was no better Friday night than he was Friday morning but he said there was never a thought to not play.

“We’re a team and I’m going to push through things and hopefully the rest of the guys will do the same thing,” he said.
saw this on another side. Gay hiding his shot percentage tbh

Lol this is exactly what I thought! :cookie:

And it's not like the players can't look up a box score on the internet or anything........

box92 11-25-2013 05:44 PM

LOL I thought the same thing. Now he can jack up as many shots as he wants

MikeToronto 11-25-2013 05:53 PM

"Nip it in the butt?" Really? ;)

I'm pretty sure he could already given what he's done so far.

Well now he can do it with his FG% being disregarded :P

carp 11-25-2013 06:18 PM

the alternative is that others no longer have to worry about teammates looking at their shot totals.... Free Ross!

KoolAid 11-25-2013 06:29 PM

Lmao really, he doesn't want guys seeing that he jacked up 30 shots to get 20 pts. :mu:

Most people actually believe that's the proper saying... scary I know.

Also I don't really think Gay's team-mates would not be aware of him jacking up a ridiculous amount of shots with or without a stat sheet.

box92 11-25-2013 07:01 PM

The thing is though, when he is passing the ball, he can get around 4-5 assists as well as 15-18 pts much more efficiently. Demar has been playing great. I really think Ross and Demar should focus on the shooting and giving it to JV in the post as much as possible. Gay will get his points without needing to shoot so much when every one else is scoring. He can focus on facilitating and getting his rebounds which he has done very well this season

i've been very critical of Gay since the beginning of this season but i think all you guys are being a little too cynical here
i view this statement as a guy who's trying to be a leader...a guy who's trying to bring this unit closer together

i like it

highonpsi 11-25-2013 07:11 PM

I like this too. He is saying and doing what Casey SHOULD be doing.

Laugh all you want, but this doesn't stop players from looking at their stats whatsoever.

of course they can. even rudy will look at his stats outside the locker room. but thats not the point. its the message rudy is trying to send to the team. unity, team ball, winning, etc.

come on. you know that.

I agree with it.

but the timing is about as awful as possible and you have to know the majority of people would make the obvious joke.

I think the suggestion that gay is doing this to "hide" his own stats is fairly ridiculous, since obviously guys can check on their mobile phones if they so wish. It's just a statement, like the rock casey brought in - have no problem with it and I don't think gay had anything but good intentions.

Of course, I also think that these gestures mean nothing. Some believe that over time, little things like this this can in fact build that famed "culture" and maybe they are right, we'll just have to see.

Personally, I would have liked it a lot more if gay was taking a leadership action on the court where he could easily set a tone for the entire team by making smart, unselfish decisions. I could care less if he shoots brick after brick because he thinks it's good or because he cares about stats, all that matters is that it's a bad decision regardless of the motivation behind it.

at the very least, he sets a good example on defense. he's been blocking at a good rate. solid help side defense, which shows he cares and doesn't give up on plays.

offensively...has a lot of work to do.
