Let me just say i have nothing against the word, and am not one to point out "bad" words. It's about how words are used. And in this case i think it does not reflect Masai's reputation well at all. There's no crime committed here at all. But if this nickname stuck it would be pretty sad. There is a direct connection to the influence of the west, along with the exploitation by the west, and the rise of really terrible people that make too many lives extremely hellish without most of us paying any heed. People like Masai are moving beyond that and deserve more support than to be called warlord.

If Simmons used "warlord" with Nigerian tribe wars in mind or because Ujiri is African, that's very distasteful. But like it or not, there's an undertone of cool associated with the word in the popular culture, and it could be that this wasn't a racial remark at all.

I think in our culture, we are a bit too quick to declare words racist or otherwise "bad". If we keep this up, soon we'll have no words left.
You are not acknowledging my point.
It's about context.
Yes, maybe in your part of the world the word is cool. (kids playing too much world of warcraft these days?
I don't get it, but if they think mass murderers are cool okie dokey)

But from where HE, Ujiri is from, it is not "cool".
Can you not understand that?
Do a little reading about where he is from and what warlords
have done to his country and people.

It's not cool.

There's no need for kids and world of warcraft remarks. You don't know me, I don't know you, so lets try to stay civil and mature, there is no reason to make a discussion personal.

Oh come on.

Once again, not a single acknowledgement, just a deflection.

Ok, I'm a bad dude because I made a funny old man comment about kids playing too much world of war craft. Really now?

Are you really mad bro?
Did I truly, personally offend you?

How about a ... "wow, I can see your point. I get where you are coming from. I never looked at it that way ..."
Nope.
Let's attack him for saying kids play too much world of warcraft.

I sincerely apologize if you were offended by my comments.
I did not mean any offense by it, I was just trying to add effect to my
lack of understanding of how someone can think a warlord is "cool".

Again, if I have hurt your feelings, I am truly sorry.

i'm not down with the term warlord for a nickname for Masai

you know I don't think bill simmons realised he offended anyone, I think he just thought it was a cool nickname if he used that term, I think if he was made aware of how insensitive his comment was and how it relates to Masai he wouldn't use it

same goes for everyone else

it makes no sense to call him a warlord anyways, he is know for more of a genius and a hard worker

he doesn't dictate

If you want acknowledgement, act like a grown up. When I see a wall of text and it's mostly drama, I don't have much time for it.

I suspect Simmons' thinking was not much different from all the people who call Jan Vesely a "Dunking Ninja." They don't mean that Vesely is a trained Asian murderer. They mean he's bad-ass. Similarly, perception of "warlord" is probably shaped by Jet Li, martial arts cinema and other factors more so than news about Nigeria. So I wonder if Simmons comment had anything at all to do with race.

LX has a fair point imo -- even if this isn't racist at all, it might still be better to avoid it. If some people are going to take it a negative way, if it's going to cause misunderstandings, then no point in that. It's not that great of a nickname anyway...

As for Simmons, this might be one of those "South Park flag" moments. I suspect he didn't refer to race or nationality at all.

I apologize if I came across childish, that was not my intent.

In most cases I would agree with you.
People are way too sensitive these days when it comes to race and ethnicity.

But in this case, I don't think it's appropriate at all.

I don't think many Asians families & friends have had lives destroyed and ruined because of Ninjas...

and Jan Vesely is a white guy no?
