Rivers Thinks He'd Be Good Fit With Raptors

Austin Rivers lists Toronto among his preferred NBA destinations.

“I have kept up with teams that fit me and the Raptors are one of those places,” Rivers said. “I think I fit in this program well. I like the way they play. I like the new coach, I like how he gets after it on defense. As far as offensively, they like to get up and down and go at them and that’s something I like to do.”

Rivers worked out for the Raptors, who have the eighth pick.

“He’s more athletic than I thought he was,” Raptors Executive vice president of basketball operations Ed Stefanski said of Rivers. “He really can compete. He has been worked out over all these years knowing what could happen to him so he’s much the pro, even right now.”

“He had the year at Duke and the one thing he can really do is he has a terrific cross-over dribble to his left hand to get to the basket. He’s quick off the bounce. He’s going to have to work on getting bigger and stronger too but he’s not even 20-years-old. We saw enough through the year that he is going to be one of the top players picked in this draft.”

Rivers = Mayo.

MBailey85 06-15-2012 01:34 PM

Rivers will be better than Mayo,

I understand some fans don't want him Toronto but he's still gonna be a good pro in most situations that he ends up in.

Why do some of you poster's iike guys like Batum & G.Wallace who don't want to play here but not like guys like Rivers & Jennings who love the city and the team? A positive attitude makes a difference and can go along way!

Jennings is nothing special, Bayless has starting stats which are practically on par with Jennings.

How will Rivers be better than Mayo? Mayo>DD. Rivers is a little short at SG, is a solid shooter and people want him to be converted to PG, sounds a lot like Mayo.

Take him. Would be a great fit on this team. A good rookie 1-2 punch with Jonas. Not really undersized at 6-4/200. Maybe could stand to bulk up a little.

Plus, he wants to play here. How many players actually want to play for us?:dancing:

If Rivers comes he'll be replacing DD. maybe include him in a deal for Gay? (JJ, DD, ED + the 2 second rounders?)

carp 06-15-2012 01:46 PM

Sure he wants to play here, so he can make mid-lottery money as opposed to mid-first round money.

Rivers is a student of the game who has a good work ethic and drive that can't be taught. Also,he's the son of a former NBA Player and great teacher of the game. It may not reflect right away but he will be better than Mayo, who I like by the way.

"Bayless has starting stats compared to Jennings"

I'm so tired of this argument. Bayless sucks as a PG.... Jennings has at least been the man at point for a team, whereas Bayless had a stretch of games putting up stats while being brutal at getting others involved. I hate Jennings, but Bayless is not as good as Jennings.

Let's please put this to bed. Bayless is an okay combo guard that will likely never be a starter on a good team.

+1 ^^^^

Thank you. I'm glad someone finally pointed this out.

sounds a lot like Jennings. his career high this year was .418 FG%. 5.5 apg. in all of bayless' games as a starter with the raps he averaged 6 dimes/game.

It's a tradeoff with JB and Jose. you lose 2-3 dimes/game but you gain 8 points, youth, someone who can actually run, a pg whose ballhandling/decision-making is more conservative the omnibus crime bill, someone who can actually drive to the basket and break down opposing teams' d (the only guy on the raps who can actually do that)

Eventhough I like Jennings and can see him fitting here, this is a powerful post...and you're likely right about why Rivers is being optimistic towards Toronto but i believe him anyway

0nekhmer 06-15-2012 02:03 PM

I also think he wants to get lottery money but he praised Toronto a lot more than other teams, even ones below us.

I agree with this but also understand it's a huge deal for him to say this because he's also going to have to live here for atleast 4 years. So I think when he says this he atleast means it. He would've been a lottery pick anyway IMHO

10gizzle 06-15-2012 02:11 PM

Judging by the way he plays, he deserves lottery money.

Kids a game. Great handles, great shot, clutch and he's got tremendous layups. I always like guys who know how to finish at the rim without having to dunk it. If you watch his film, he almost finishes a lot of his layups like James Harden.

He'd be a perfect bench player for us with potential to grow.

carp 06-15-2012 02:25 PM

Some good counter points to mine in this thread, though I don't agree Rivers is a guaranteed Lotto pick, at least not a top 10.

I do like that he is intelligent enough to recognize the benefits of Toronto and the Raptors, but some of this is inherently about wanting to go higher.... which I don't blame as it is completely understandable. I think I've seen him be projected as a Jason Terry, Jamal Crawford type and that's how I see it turning out. Not a bad option, but I think the Raps need to focus on players that can be much better two-way starters. Just an opinion though.

Indeed. Jennings is worst case scenario for me in terms of PG. AST% of 26.7. USG% of 25.9. That's not a PG. That's a SG. Throw in the inefficiency and complete lack of any defense at all, and it is no surprise his team gets better defensively when he sits down (by about 11 points per 100 possessions!), and only slightly worse offensively - not great for the offensive "sparkplug" of your team.
