Default Ridiculous blatant anti-Toronto sports journalism

Ok so I watched last night's game and it was certainly a decent game although we lost. I always like to read box scores and PBPs after the game to look at stats, etc. Few things interested me.

My favourite moment in the game was when james johnson sent back nick young's shot to force OT. Well that thing isn't even recorded on the box score and play-by-play

Toronto Raptors vs. Washington Wizards - Box Score - February 06, 2012 - ESPN

same with NBA.com take a look at JJ's BS column and the PBP tab

Games | NBA.com

Quote:
00:10.2 Team Timeout : Regular
00:10.2 Vesely Substitution replaced by Evans
Calderon Substitution replaced by Carter 00:10.2
Johnson Substitution replaced by Johnson 00:10.2
00:00.9 Wall Jump Shot: Missed
Carter Rebound (Off:0 Def:1) 00:00.9
Team Timeout : Short 00:00.9
00:00.9 Evans Substitution replaced by Vesely
Carter Substitution replaced by Calderon 00:00.9
Calderon Turnover : Bad Pass (3 TO) Steal:Wall (2 ST) 00:00.7
Also if you watch the game recap video, it shows a highlight of nick young's 3-pointer in the 2nd (the one he made in front of his bench where he got fouled by ED), and in the video the guy says he converted the 4 point play. IIRC, he didn't (he missed the FT).

Also on ESPN recap's page it says

Quote:
Trevor Booker hit the first of two free throws with 6.7 seconds left. Young rebounded Booker's miss, was fouled and hit the second of two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to make it 111-108. Linas Kleiza's 3-point attempt at the buzzer fell short.
when it was Caldy who airballed it.

I'm just wondering why these journalists and statisticians make these kind of simple mistakes on Raptor games. I have seen this kind of thing happen too many times and it just seem that they have monkeys doing the job when its our team playing. Perfect example of NBA's hate to the city of Toronto - makes me remember the time when Ed got drafted and reporters asking questions about taxes.

is it really that big of a deal? this kinda stuff happens all the time and not just to the raptors.

It doesnt help the fact that two terrible teams are playing. if i was the scorekeeper for this game and wasnt a fan of either team i would probably fall asleep in 2nd quarter and make everything up.

also, it is absurd to think this is anti toronto.

haha

I was thinking "two shitty teams are playing. They probably assign the rookie scorekeepers/statisticians to the crap games."

lol just starting some shit up cos the board gets really boring with a kind of season like this.

back to the matter at hand, i would think they would hire the best since the NBA does an almost flawless job of keeping track of stats. I read a lot of
"pontius pilate scores ... points, becomes the 146th player in the league to record ... points, ... assists, etc with jesus christ and many others". Other sports I follow do not talk a lot about stats

Two bad teams are playing - isn't a fucking excuse to make up or to not notice players' stats.
Well, i've seen lots of times in nba.com wrong statistics. Isn't it the most expensive and professional league in the world..? This is horrible.

I've seen our player make an assist on a fast break and that play went into the official Highlights video of the game, but that player had 0 assists after the game in the nba.com stats.

agree about the need for proper stat keeping. disagree about this being anti-toronto.

I agree that there is anti Toronto journalism in the states, but this isn't one of them. It's come to a point though that unless it's a sexy team, or big market they're anti bad team in general, unless it's the NYK. I've never seen so many Clippers games in a 6 week span. Lol

It isn't a huge deal in most respects, except for one thing. Players are rewarded for statistical output. I am CERTAIN james Johnson in averaging MINIMUM 3 blocks a game.

The stat people don't seem to see it that way. In fact, he is no where near it on the NBA stat chart. Away games? Biased stat guys?? I don't know but hell, he gets at least two BIG blocks a game, that doesn't count the numerous tips he gets that are still blocked shots. thats the difference between just some guy and a DPOY candidate that includes millions in endorsements and a trip to the allstar game. Surely lofty targets, but you see where I'm going with this.

Yeah it is strange. He's listed at 1.5BPG. I agree that he seems to be in the 2-3 per game, with the odd game with 3-4. Didn't he have one game this season where he had 5 or 6?

You almost understand. It has nothing to do with being anti-Toronto though. Nothing. You really don't need to go through the self-pity. It's about the NY media, their obsessions, and their not caring so much about dipshit teams. I highly doubt that any of the people working for the major media outlets would muster up the effort it would take to work an anti-Toronto angle, when they could take the same energy and apply it to the Heat or the emergence of Jeremy Lin or something. If you need to insist otherwise, I would say you greatly over-estimate their abilities.

As for the stats - unless it's right around the basket, or an unmistakable swat, they've always tended to be stingey with blocking stats. And this isn't baseball. The stats aren't that big of a deal. Defensive stats in general were not kept for the longest time. Anything the team finds important will be kept track of by their own stats guys.

BS have been directly linked to a great deal of past DPOY's though. It may be that they run a double standard though... nothing to do with Toronto, but likely for marquee guys, stuff like that.

Anyhow, JJ has a lot of blocks, he certainly has a talent for it.
