Ric Bucher: Celtics should be worried?
Interesting? I didn't realize we had that easy a schedule after February.

Huge qualifications need to be made regarding the schedule. Opponents' winning percentage is just one of several variables that need to be considered. If you just look at the opponents winning percentage, you're setting yourself up to be wrong about some things.
Two games help illustrate this point: 1 - Later in March, we have a road game against New Jersey. On the surface, that should be a road win the Raps can easilty get. However, the Raps are on a back 2 back while the Nets will have several days of rest. It's a road game that looks super easy but has the potential to be a big upset. 2 - Later in March, I believe it's the 29th, the Raps play the Bobcats on the road. Now, in terms of winning percentage, the Bobcats are .500. But, at home, they are much better than that. Furthermore, the Raps will, again, be on a back 2 back when playing this road game. And, again, the opponent will have several days rest. Last time the Raps played the Bobcats on the road, it was the 2nd night of a back 2 back and Charlotte had several days rest....the end result was a blowout. I could cite more examples, but I think these two give an example of how opponents' winning percentage can be misleading when not placed in context. |

It's a good point. The numbers can and do lie. How do you really calculate the strength or weakness of a schedule? On top of what ACGM suggests, you just don't know where any of the teams in the schedule are going to be in terms of injuries, hot streaks, or anything like that.
Look at Toronto at the end of last season. They were playing much better, playing as if the games meant something even though they didn't, and they were winning at a good clip. That can happen with some of the "easy" teams yet to come in the schedule, while we could hit a night against Cleveland where Lebron sits out because he's chewed his fingernails down to the bone. |
