Respect? The Raptors do not care about league-wide respect

Quote:
Since Dec. 4, the Toronto Raptors are 24-11. That is a winning percentage of .686. If the Raptors had been winning at that clip for the whole season, they would currently be in second place in the Eastern Conference.

And still, the issue of league-wide respect pops up. Maybe it is because the franchise first two marquee players, Damon Stoudamire and Vince Carter, bolted town. Maybe it is because the Raptors never get shown on national television in the United States. There is a definite inferiority complex that follows the team around.

The players, though, remain unaffected.

"I don't care. I don't think any of us care," swingman Antoine Wright said. "We don't need to be talked about. We want to get better as a team and win as many games as possible, under the radar, so to speak."

"I don't know what it takes," Raptors coach Jay Triano added. "Maybe it takes making a stronger run. Maybe it takes doing well in the playoffs. I'm not sure. I think people are starting to slowly see us as the season goes and realize that we're playing pretty well."

Wright had another theory.

"We're in Canada," Wright said. "The media has to come through customs over here to do stories on us. I don't think they like to do that."

The Raptors have a nation with less people in it than the state of California, and 90% of those are puck heads.

But I agree with the view that Wright seems to be promoting: who cares what other teams think? What really matters is whether you win or lose games.

Mind you, when free agency comes around, I usually feel a bit more bitter about the pro-US bias in the league.

I really hope Antoine is still here come next season, he's on the cusp of becoming our version of Bruce Bowen. He already has the solid defense and the corner three down-pat, time to start kicking guys feet out while they're in the air.

how many articles have we read about the Raptors doing well from the U.S media,

how much more attention do they need, the only way the can get more is if they start competing record wise with the top teams
