Trading Barbosa + Pietris to Hornets for Okafor + a 1st might work though...but it will just get vetoed
ye im hoping he does really well, and then we can use him as trade bait

10 under contract (Jose, Bargs, Barbosa, Amir, Kleiza, DD, Bayless, Davis, JJ, Alabi) + Magloire + Pietrus = 12 players. We need 13. And can have up to 15. So we'll see 1 to 3 more signings, with 2 being the most likely based on Colangelo's remarks.

Smith and Jones are talking about it, and are saying that Pietrus has wanted to play in Toronto for years. That can't be a bad thing.

Yep. What he said.

I do hope that Casey will still find some consistent minutes for JJ just so we can get an idea of how good he really is, but this is a good signing.

Nice signing. Will provide some veteran leadership for our younger guys. He played quite well for the Magic when they went to the finals a couple years back.

I very much like this trade.

We may in fact miss that 2nd rounder (depending on when it is - sorry I haven't had time to read the entire thread - but if it's next year or the year after, if may be really high in the 2nd round when there's some value), but Pietrus fits exactly what BC said in his press conference and fills a huge need.

We get a stop-gap SF to fill the void for a year, while we decide what to do, he's an expiring, and if he likes TO and his playing time, maybe he'll sign a deal afterwards.

The only "problem" with this deal, is for the pro-tankers...he may actually help win us a game or two on the defensive end, as he'll be the finisher going up against the other teams' star SFs, and he'll actually get some stops.

I like this move!

Plus it's not like Petrius is this NBA allstar who will get most of the minutes. All three guys will have to internally compete for their time and that's not a bad thing.
Well you do have a oint Pietris is not an all star, but he is a much more overall better player than Johnson is currently even with his slow strides from last season. He still has quite a lot to improve on before I believe that JJ will be a consistent starter otherwise he'll just be sitting on the bench with foul trouble. We initially signed Kleiza to be our smalltopower forward type of player. I was never too high on him when we signed him to begin with but that isn't the point. He's capable of standing his own ground in scoring and not making silly mistakes. But Kleiza did have a big injury so youll never know how he pans out or he might even get the axe. But this is a year for Johnson to prove to us what he has after being on the bench for so long with the Bulls. Even though its a shortened season and games are practically every other day mixed in with travelling and practices, JJ cant get exhaustion get to him and show his improvements as a smarter player. And tbh Ill bee seeing mostly Pietris on the floor most of the time over JJ where he'll just be a role player 6thman

a little internal competition is always good, especially at 1 of the positions we are most in need of
at worst this alone gives us more tradeable assets

Not another soft euro.

Just had to get that out of the way. Nice to see the new coach getting some players that can help him change the tide. He ain't gonna do it if he needs to hide 2 to 3 players on the floor at any given time.

It's a conditional second round pick - in other words nothing at all. It is probably top 55 protected, or something.

I think the last opportunity to pick up Pietrus was in 2007. Raptors were at the top of his list, and he was near the top of Raps list. Colangelo ended up choosing Kapono over Pietrus.

I like his game but I wish the Raps had picked him up then instead of now. Regardless, I think he is a perfect fit in terms of talent for the short-term and flexibility for the long-term.

Thanks DanH,

As I said, I didn't have a chance to read through the whole thread, but if the cost is (that) minimal, then I like this deal even more. If Pietrus likes TO, he may even sign back with us after his one year deal is up, and we can always use this kind of depth.

I read somewhere that the picks is protected 31-50, so yep, nothing to fret about.

Ha - you nailed it. I think my brain was protecting me by forgetting that. Time to start taking up yoga so I can let it go.
