What's the story behind our naming process anyway? Wasn't there a vote or something?

I don't mind the Canada angle here, but let's be honest about one thing that may be hard to overcome.....

I can't be the only person who has experienced people who say the hate basketball and will never follow the Raptors.......often followed by a mocking gesture of "yo-yo-yo". i.e. It is a little too "urban" and some people don't want anything to to with "those kinds of people".

Harsh reality and some people don't like to talk about it, but it's out there. Americans have a long history with basketball and have watched it evolve. Some Canadians are still in that mode of "Oh. they're not really our guys". they may have to line the courside seats with leafs in their jerseys to get attention.

A lot of people in the US think the same way.

In some parts of the US it's much worse, since there is deeply ingrained racism involved.

Football is the clear #1 sport, baseball #2 and basketball #3, there's just more people, so it seems like it's more popular than it really is.

Sure, mostly hockey fans that don't respect most other sports. Those same people call baseball boring and put that down as well. Yet they'll watch the NFL.............that's not urban at all.

Fans suggested names, selected finalists, ownership picked Raptors from those finalists

The list of finalists included: hogs, dragons, huskies just off the top of my head.

I was okay with Huskies ...

The Canada Team angle isn't new ... if we had an excellent team, the rest of the country and free agents wouldn't have a problem coming to TO.
A losing BB Team just doesn't cut in a Hockey country .. Thank god for large cities where BB is gaining more traction thru time.

Yup, Huskies is the best choice IMO. A lot of history behind it.

The league was involved in picking the name. I don't recall ownership having the final say.

Dragons sounds sick. But not really relevent to the city, Toronto Dragons.... anyways... Hogs? Wha? How was that a finalist?

The Toronto Pike, or Trout.

Though, there's nothing more Canadian than a lumberjack...

Huskies.........But updated.

Steal the Kansas uni, Huskies where it says Kansas, a blood red leaf near the left shoulder.

But does this mean we've seen the last of the Raptor mascot in 2016? Because this beaver guy is just gonna scare kids.
