Question Regarding Jay Triano's Late Game Defensive Changes

I have some questions for the more knowledgable than I.

Been reading a lot lately of Triano's late game changes of defense, again in today's smith's blog.

Now it makes complete sense to me the reason's why you may switch things up, and is commendable if/when it works, which it seems it has been.

But i guess what I am wondering, is this something often done by other teams. Against us, or against others? Is it a common strategy coaches use, or is it something that is used only on occasion? Is it being used only in late/close games? Is it only because we are not a good defensive team? etc etc

I guess my questions stem from the fact that it seems like its a big deal lately, as if its never been done before! So why is it a big deal now?

Thanks

We finally have some people that are really good defenders, but not the most offensively gifted people. So in the final minutes of a close game you pull switches to get your good defense guys out there when they have or are going to have the ball and when you are bringing it up the floor you have your offense guys on the floor.

I don't see a lot of other teams doing it, but it seems to work for us.

It's all about having a big jump in defensive abilities and basketball IQ with Antoine healthy and playing well, along with being able to work with Bargs and/or Bosh as anchors in the paint. Bargnani improving greatly on help defense makes a huge difference. You put those sorts of elements into play, and you can tighten things up when needed, or just give a different look and keep the opposing teams guessing as to where they want to attack. Late in games, if you can make the other team uncertain for a moment, then they are likely in a pressing situation, to make more bad decisions.

Assuming you're in the lead

If you're down 10 with 1:45 to go, you have your big guns and best free throw shooters in

I think what triano means is that they usually study the game in the first 3 quarters, and than try to adjust to it in the 4th, while also bringing the secret weapons planned before the game. NBA games usually stay close going into the 4th, so you don't want to show your cards to early, to give the other team time to counter-act. Personally, I think it's a smart strategy, but somewhat limited against teams we play 3 or 4 times, as they probably have enough time to see it all.

That being said, I'm very impressed with Triano's tweaks and fixed plays - he's really standing out in that respect. His strength is clearly Xs and Os, which is interesting, because it seems he and Sam were really opposites (Sam was a great motivational coach, but very very poor with Xs/Os, while triano doesn't seem to be that good with the motivational aspect).

The other thing I really like about him is that he's willing to adjust his plans to the personnel, and he listens to other points of views, even unconventional ones, like statisticians). In my opinion, the more information you accumulate, the better prepared you are, and inflexibility can be really damaging (not always though).

how come "adjusting in 4th" always ends up with Jose+Jack combination? Only Rautins likes that combo. Come on!

Jay still sucks!!! Even when we won some late games, it was mostly his fault that leads have disapeard so fast!

It is?

Has Triano been suiting up and playing the games?

so whose merit was that we built the leads in the first place?
Again, you can choose to look at his mistakes, or you can choose to look at the good things.
