Matt Bonner is one of the players Raptors fans used to bash a lot. He used to play very hard and he was a big body who could shoot 3s for Raptors. He was traded to Spurs and now he is a nice role player for a very good team. I always thought Matt Bonner is a player who Raptors shouldn't trade away, they got Kapono to replace him and Kapono is no better than Bonner.

Bonner >> Kapono

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss Matt and would take him back in a heart beat over Kapono if we could.

The trade to deal away Bonner was a fair trade. Rasho here was just as valuable as Bonner is in San Antonio.

However, he's the type of guy I like on this team. He had balls, stood up for his teammates and was just a good guy. Give him credit though, he's worked pretty hard to get where he is.

Oh enough with the "bring back former Raptors" stuff.

Bonner is playing great on a team that has everyone concerned about Timmy, Tony Longoria and Manu FLOP G!! We have no one in any of their class level.

Thats why Kapono cant get a shot off. No one doubles Bosh consistently. Defenders go low and wide and he shoots. Double Jose or one of our 2 or 3's??? Are you kidding me?

I watched the game and watched Bonner for extended periods. He is perfect for the Spurs. He boxes out and keeps the other teams C working all the time. His shots are all perimeter shots that bring the other teams center out to guard leaving the middle open....for one of the big three to exploit.

I'm extremely happy for Bonner. He is genuinely a great person. He has found a roll he can excel in and loves it. We couldnt offer the same.

No one is writing trade x for Bonner. More just an appreciation of the guy is all I see.

Hold your horses ... where did you see "Bring back Bonner"?

Regarding Bonner vs Kapono, here is my take:
- both have excellent long range jumpers
- both can't dribble or create their own shoot
- Bonner is bigger than Kapono;
- Bonner can defend bigs (4/5) and box out while Kapono is pretty much a pylon on defense.
- Kapono's contract is too expensive for what he brings on.

The usage of Bonner could be the same as Kapono + some extra-hassling on defense. Bonner looked more committed to play hard, Kapono looks like he wants to play only on Playoffs.

I don't watch much games outside of raptor ones, but i wonder if Bonner improved his ability to shoot off the dribble. I remember that was very much his weakness here. As a catch and shoot big, he was great, but as soon as he put the ball on the floor, he looked akward and had no balance in his shot. You could tell he tried to work on it one off season when he was with the raptors... i wonder if he's any better at it.

I'm cheering hard for the guy, and he's really the only guy that I kinda wish we could have kept. And he's really playing Bargnani's game - not Kapono's.

He looked pretty good off the dribble yesterday Fancy. I think that is the thing that kept him from getting minutes down there initially, along with understanding the defense. Now he just looks very comfortable and able to play within himself. It looks like long term the Spurs really got the most out of the trade.

You put Kapono on the Spurs and he torches the league.

Playing on a GREAT team makes a difference.

ughhhh i'd love Bonner on this team right now.
the guy flat out plays hard every possession.
his shot off thedribble is getting better, he had a few buckets last night from dribbling into the paint and putting up a jumper.
he's going to be a very serviceable big man in this league for years to come. he looks as though playing under Pops has helped him alot as well....
i miss that guy!

Unfortunately, Bonner was asked to play the 3 his last season here which is really unfair.

He was always one of the smartest players out there though, knew his role and never tried to do too much ans hustled his ass off...which of course makes him a perfect fit for a place like San Antonio.

I miss Bonner too.
I'm with Raptorman when he says enough with the former players already (which I've been making obvious on here), but the RR is one guy I would love to have back.

I don't argue that, however we are talking about what's the best for Raptors, not Spurs

The Spurs don't really qualify as being GREAT right now. great maybe. GREAT - i don't think so. And Kapono could also not see much of the floor playing there. One thing Bonner said yesterday, was that if he doesn't shoot when he's open, then he gets yanked. Sam often said the same sort of things, but Pops will follow through and not just in terms of limiting minutes.

The Spurs have a long-standing tradition of playing sub-standard ball before the all-star break.

Come playoff time no one will want to play them... as usual.

Not GREAT? They're second in the West. This is a typical Spurs season - flying under the radar and going in for the kill come playoff time. Don't be surprised if they oust LA and find their way into the finals again.

What about Roger Mason, Jr? Another former Raptor who looks great in their system.

Personally, I think it is nice to see guys who approach the game like real professionals find a place where they can really establish a career. Kudos to the Red Rocket.

Rasho was a key contributor on both playoff teams. Bonner is a guy who couldn't even shoot 45% from the field getting wide open looks on a stacked SAS team until this season.

As Bonner is playing now, he'd be decent on our Raptors squad (not at all what we need though - we have enough PF/C's and he certainly doesn't bring toughness). As Bonner was playing the last 2 seasons; it was much better just to develop Bargnani over that time.
---------

Roger Mason Jr, on the other hand, would be a decent 10ppg weapon off the bench for us. He sticks 3 pointers at a high clip (40% last year, 45% this year) and unlike Kapono, he doesn't try to do too much and play outside of his skill set.

You do know the year the Spurs won the title while Rasho was there he averaged 0.7 points and 1.7 rebounds a game in the playoffs? The last two seasons of his three years in San Antonio were huge disappointments.

Bonner is doing pretty much the same things (given the minutes) he did for the Raps.

I should have been more clear. Rasho was key in OUR two playoff appearances.
