Default Reality check

Reading through some of the topics lately, it seems to me that there's a need for a reality check.

The fact is, we are doing more than ok after 14 games. Before the season, considering the schedule, injuries and the time required to gel, most if not all would have been happy with this record. We are the best offense in the league, and almost the worst offense, none expected and frankly, we are not that bad on D, so there's every chance we'll improve. We're also doing better in rebounding (the main complaint throughout the summer).

Almost everybody would have been happy if Bargnani was averaging 18/6, and nobody should have expected good, consistent defense from him. Yet, it looks like too many seem shocked that he's not a great defender ... Same with calderon, no reasonable fan would have thought Calderon will be a good defender, he's not capable of that. And btw, you can't say that bargnani/calderon sucks in one sentence and than ask for them to be traded for marc gasol or devin harris in the next ...

Also, if anybody thought this team would challenge the top teams this season, they should stop visiting the forum this year, because it's not going to happen. We are aiming for that 4th spot, which could be a stretch now that Atlanta is playing so well, but 5th is a possibility, and this team will be much better at the end of the year imo.

In my opinion, there are a lot of positives after the first 3 weeks, and far fewer negatives.

I have to agree with this post.

If we were told before the season that:

-Evans would miss roughly 20 games
-Wright would miss 5 of the 1st 14 games and be banged up
-Hedo wouldn't be 100% for the 1st 15-20games
-Belinelli would go down to a groin injury
-Jack would struggle
-Jose would shoot 30% from 3 for the first 15 games

Who in the hell would have predicted being 6-8 at this point with this schedule and those above mentioned circumstances? Not i

I just want to be within a few games of .500 after next sunday. Then we can forward to a much more favourable schedule in December, when we'll likely get Reggis back.

As optimistic as I wanna be, I don't really see potential for improvement. I have no confidence in our backcourt, more importantly Calderon. His decision making at times cost us possessions. I don't even have to mention his defense. I'm not sure why BC thinks Derozan will become the next Carter overnight. If we wanna compete at a high level one of our guards has to be step up. Otherwise we move pieces and get an allstar 2gaurd like Butler!!!

all of that is irrelevant. what matters is how bad the current roster is playing, regardless of the injured players. None of our starting 5's are injured, so there should be no problem. 6-8 is bad considering the amount of talent on this team, imo.

I was predicting 2-10 after the first 12 games, so I am more than OK with the current state of affairs.

I guess people are somewhat upset because the team has already shown, albeit in glimpses, that it can be even better than they've been so far.

Hedo is playing hurt and is nowhere near 100%. Bargs today was nowhere near 100%.

The fact is, yes we have alot of talent and good depth. Are we a top tier team, no. So we're not a top tier team and we have key injuries to one of our starters and our best depth players, namely Belinelli, Wright, Evans. Sorry, but that's a factor. Add to that, we've played approximately half of our games against teams that have more talent then us.

Orlando x2, Pheonix, Dallas, SA, Utah, Denver, Cleveland are all better then us. Guess what..... those are 8 games, and we have 8 losses. As it likely should be, especially considering we have key injuries. People need to get a grip.

Wins
Cleveland (10-4)
Miami (8-5)
Chicago (6-6)
Detroit (5-9)
New Orleans (6-9)
Clippers (5-9)

Loses
x 2 Orlando (11-3)
Phoenix (11-3)-road
Dallas (10-3) -road
Denver (9-4) -road
Utah (7-6) -road
San Antonio (5-6) -road
Memphis (4-9) -road

Overall, like everyone has been saying, I think we have some things to be positive about. With the exception of a couple of bad road games, the Raps are beating the teams they should beat. 6 of our 8 loses came to teams who currently have above .500 records. And it would be 7 except the Spurs are really up and down right now. The truth of the matter is, we were very, very close to beating the Suns, and we were also close to beating the Spurs and the Grizzlies on the road. The Raps lost those games, the Suns, Spurs and Grizz didn't win them. The Raps could very easily be a 9-5 squad right now, even having played one of the tougher schedules in the league. The combined record of the teams we lost to is 57-34, so far. The Raps are okay. If they keep beating the teams that they should beat, while also playing some goods teams tough at home, the Raps will make the playoffs.

I gotta try and find that post.

honestly, if the raps play a good game, with good execution then the current record would not matter. but when you have one of our backbone players like calderone, missing 3 straight OPEN jumpers, then committing a high school turnover on the next possession or the supposed MVP having only 1 FG attempt in the fourth quarter or one of the most skilled players acquired over the summer shooting an awful 25% it really stings. what's annoying is that such things don't just happen once, rather every other game. a simple solution would be to trade the lagers aka jose&bargs.

Not that bad on defense?
We're frighteningly bad on defense. To the point where the best possible scenario is thought as being average on defense. It's what's holding this team back - and sadly I think it will continue through the entire year.

Yeah, I know, injuries and the schedule. To be honest though? Good teams finish games and we've let too many slip. We're slightly above average. That should be the reality check here.

Do you think that some of our startes underperforming (at least in some facets), Jay should experiment (a bit, not like smitch) with starting lineup?
Most obvious is to bench Bargs and replace Derozan, if it weren't for confidence issues. But its not whos starting, its whos finishing.
Start Wright and Amir to have that D working from first seconds.

Also for closing out games, Belli deserves to be in the lineup much more than Jack or Wright.
Calderon-Belinelli-Hedo-Bosh-Bargs is clutch and versatile.

a) I think Calderon will get his jumper back
b) If we get Bosh more touches against the Magic, we win that game.

We were 2-8 2 years ago, and finished 47-35, didn't we?

To show we're a good team, we have to beat indiana and charlotte, compete with boston, and try to protect our home court against phoenix.

bargs on bench = bad idea. He has shown he cannot produce when he comes off the bench.

I am totally off the Calderon bandwagon. He is flat out horrible. We need a defensive minding PG, or a PG who can break down the defense to start. Calderon provides none of that.

Well, it's early. Last year he showed that he can run a team. I think that if he can get back to hitting his jumpers and also start taking a few more risks you'll be back on the bandwagon.

that was me, and it wasn't right when we got him, it was specifically after the blowout preseason loss to the celtics. all i said was that he looked like a boy among men, which he did. he looked lost on both offense and defense, and my criticism was that he just coasted and didn't make anything happen out there while a guy like weems was going hard to the rack and making an imprint on the game with a fraction of the skill belinelli has. that shows me two things - first, the belinelli's confidence has improved dramatically and he is making things happen by being assertive, and second, that you can't tell much from a preseason game.

No, the comment i was talking about was said in the summer. It was prior to the pre-season. Someone specically said just after we got him that he shouldn't even be in the NBA and that he knows best because he's seen him play alot internationally and in GS. Not that it matters, really. He can flat out play and i'm just glad we have him. Now all we need is for him to be back in the lineup Tuesday.
