*REALISTIC* NBA comparison for Valanciunas

After watching the first 21 games of the season I have come to the conclusion that Jonas Valanciunas is most comparable to...

NENAD KRSTIC

Watch his highlights and read his stats before you disagree:

For those of you who disagree, please share your expectations.

I see more Marc Gasol than I do Krstc. Krstic was slow defensively, but a solid midrange shooter and good team player. Val, one he gets more experience, I think can be a Gasol like player on defence, who clogs the middle, plays very good pick and roll defence, and above average post defence. And I already like the moves I've seen from Val on offence, as he continues to grow, he should have a good midrange shot, a good post fadeaway over his right shoulder, hook shot to his left, and a solid finisher on the pick and roll. I think Val will be in the 8.5-9.5 RPG range in his prime.

Krstic was a good player in his prime years, but I think Valanciunius has more talent and potential to be great, something Krstic never reached.

This fan base feeds off potential. Maybe we should just get rid of the team and just potentially have one.

I like Kaman as a comparison more than Krstic. I am not impressed by Valanciunas' basketball IQ. He is closer to a half second slow on plays than a half second quick, mentally

JV is 20 games in and I've already seen flashes that are better than Kristic's "career highlights". Kristic could shoot but was more of an opportunist.

I'd expect him to be closer to Tyson chandler with a little better offense. When he is stronger and more experienced, he is going to be a problem. And don't forget that he's known for being able to hit frees.

Dark Knight 12-09-2012 11:43 PM

Kristic would be a real kick in the balls. Val is the only glimmer of hope left for this team. :sigh:

Take a look at Gasol's highlights:

He scores his baskets mainly by man-handling his defender down low; something Val will likely never be able to do considering his size. In fact, speaking of size...

Marc Gasol: 7-1 265 bs
J. Valanciunas: 6-11 230 lbs

Tyson Chandler? C'mon. Tyson's game is almost entirely based on his athleticism and strength: two attributes Valanciunas simply does not possess.

...Sure, Val can put on some lbs, but will it ever be enough? AND, will it be at the expense of his speed? Dude's a twig.

I actually posted this thread because of BC's comments during an interview earlier today, specifically, when he said:
'Valanciunas is the "face" of this franchise going forward.'

A bit too hopeful if you ask me.

He has shown flashes of it, who knows, maybe when he is surrounded by some good players he could be.

Dario 12-09-2012 11:58 PM

LOL.

I said it many times, we don't need to try to find a player to compare JV to. Hopefully in the future people will be comparing players to him.

ha-ha. To come close to accomplishing what Chandler does but with a bit better offense is not that outlandish. Chandler's not Dwight.

JV is thin, but has not had an NBA workout regimen and has not had the experience of playing college ball. His size and experience has not caught up to his basketball skill. I'm not worried that he will improve because he does not come across as lazy.

He won defensive player of the year and has been a defensive stalwart ever since he came into this league. JV gets pushed around SO easily by rejects like Cousins and Patterson. I just don't think it's a fair comparison.

OK, Tyson Chandler wasn't a defensive stalwart as a high schooler drafted in Chicago. It took him good 2-3 years to become a good defender and he's never become a good offensive player. This has nothing to do with Val, simply commenting on your statements.

You think Chandler didn't get pushed around? If you think Jonas is a twig, then what the hell do you think Chandler was as a rookie?

You're seeing a rookie learning the physical toll of playing in this league. He'll have ups and downs all season.

How are Cousins and Patterson rejects?

You seem to want to find an even darker cloud than already exists for Raptor fans. What's the point in that?

finstock 12-10-2012 12:53 AM

Krstic was a good pick and pop player, whereas I believe Jonas has much more potential with his back to the basket. He also runs the floor much better, and showcases quicker ups. Defensively, I think Jonas will cover more ground, due to superior length, motor, quicks.

creative1mm 12-10-2012 01:12 AM

it won't be long before he is better then Nenad Kristic.. he will be more Athletic and stronger then him.. better moves as well. I see more of a Marc Gasol indeed

MikeToronto 12-10-2012 01:14 AM

To be more like either Gasol, but especially Marc, JV would have to put some serious muscle on that frame of his. Remains to be seen how easy or hard that would be for him and how much mobility he will lose if he were to do so.
